Jamestown Renaissance Corporation starts a new chapter...

📣 Exciting news for Downtown Jamestown!

Over the past year, the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation (JRC) has undertaken a strategic evolution of its mission, governance structure, and priorities to strengthen its role as a catalyst for downtown revitalization and economic development. Building on nearly two decades of work implementing Jamestown's Urban Design Plan, JRC is sharpening its focus on economic growth, downtown housing, business attraction and retention, placemaking, and catalytic redevelopment projects that create a stronger, more vibrant Urban Core.

As part of this next chapter, JRC is pleased to announce the hiring of Michael Edwards as its new Director of Downtown Revitalization, effective July 1.

Michael brings more than 30 years of experience in downtown management, economic development, placemaking, and community revitalization, having led transformative initiatives in communities across the country, including Pittsburgh, Chicago, Spokane, and North East, Pennsylvania.

In his new role, Michael will work closely with businesses, property owners, residents, nonprofit organizations, and public-sector partners to advance downtown revitalization initiatives, strengthen strategic partnerships, attract investment, support entrepreneurship, activate public spaces, and help guide the next phase of downtown Jamestown's growth.

Over the coming months, Michael will be meeting with residents, businesses, stakeholders, and community partners to listen, learn, and help shape the future of downtown Jamestown.

Please join us in welcoming Michael to the community!

📣The WNY Regional Team from Empire State Development is co-hosting presentations with economic development leaders throughout the region to discuss the NYS Consolidated Funding Application (CFA). Chautauqua County's event is THIS WEDNESDAY at the White Inn in Fredonia, and there still time to register!

The CFAs offer a modernized grant application process by pulling together multiple state funding sources into one portal, making it quicker, easier, and more effective.

If you are a business owner, non-profit professional or community leader, these workshops highlight the ways to utilize state programs for regional economic development. And if you have interest in applying for some of this funding, schedule a time to come chat with our Economic Development Coordinator!

What can Buffalo's innovative food organizations teach us about strengthening our local economy in Chautauqua County?

🍎🥦🍞🥕🥩🧀🥔🫑

Last Friday, our Economic Development Coordinator, Aili, traveled up to Buffalo with partners from the Jamestown Farmers Market, Chautauqua County Department of Planning & Development, and Southern Tier West to tour the Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP), FreshFix, and the Westminster Economic Development Initiative (WEDI). Each of these organizations are tackling food access, local food production, and entrepreneurship in unique ways that are creating opportunities for residents, small businesses, and communities.

The visit sparked great conversations about how similar ideas could be adapted and scaled for Jamestown and Chautauqua County. From supporting local growers and expanding access to fresh, healthy food, to helping food entrepreneurs launch and grow their businesses, these models demonstrate how food systems can serve as powerful economic development tools.

Investments in local food infrastructure don't just address community needs; they create opportunities for farmers, producers, retailers, restaurants, and startup businesses, too! They can help keep dollars circulating locally, create jobs, activate underutilized spaces, and strengthen connections between producers and consumers. And all the while, they improve access to nutritious food and help build a more resilient local food network.

We're grateful to our hosts for sharing their knowledge and experiences. Seeing these programs in action provided valuable inspiration! The best ideas are often those that can be adapted to fit local needs, and we're excited about the possibilities these conversations could create for Jamestown and the broader Chautauqua County region.
