Position Title:
Family Advocate
Job Summary:
Advocate for victim rights by engaging with non-offending caregivers when the child or children in their care have experienced abuse, trauma, and/or are the victim in a criminal investigation.
The Family Advocate ensures the youth and caregivers understand the criminal justice process, engages with the appropriate multi-disciplinary team members throughout the investigation and/or prosecution, attend court proceedings providing support and connect the family to necessary services to promote healing. I.e. trauma therapy, medical services, financial assistance, access to the Office of Victim Services, etc.
The Family Advocate will engage with youth and children to explain victim rights, gauge the youth’s opinion on the investigation/prosecution and advocate for the youth when communicating with caregivers and multi-disciplinary team members in a trauma informed manor.
The Family Advocate regularly communicates with partners including Child Protection Services, Law Enforcement, the District Attorney’s Office, Medical Providers, Counselors, and many more essential services requiring strong communication skills from the Family Advocate.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in human services preferred. Minimum associate degree in relevant field with two years of experience in the field of child services including case management.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide assessment of client needs, develop a plan to meet client needs and coordinate appropriate referrals.
Maintain engagement with victims and non-offending caregivers throughout their involvement with CAP to promote healing and justice.
Regularly communicate with multi-disciplinary team members for case updates and recommendations.
Provide criminal court advocacy, court preparation, and support for victims and families in coordination with prosecution.
Document client and multi-disciplinary team interactions.
Participate in community outreach and educational events.
Work a flexible schedule as required by responsibilities of the position.
Occasional use of an automobile, a valid NY State driver’s license and proof of valid insurance required.
