☀️ Summer Fun and Summer Food! 🍎🥪

Did you know that kids and teens ages 18 and under can enjoy free, nutritious meals throughout the summer at local parks, community centers, libraries, and other community locations?

Meals include healthy options such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein, and many sites also offer fun activities for children and families.

Beginning in late June, families can find nearby meal sites by:
📍 Visiting SummerMealsNY.org
📞 Calling 211 or 1-866-3-HUNGRY

Summer meals work alongside Summer EBT, which provides eligible families with food benefits to help purchase groceries during the summer months.

Important Summer EBT reminders:
✔️ Benefits are issued as a one-time payment for the entire summer
✔️ Most eligible children receive benefits automatically, while some families may need to apply
✔️ Benefits expire 122 days after they are loaded, so be sure to use them promptly
✔️ Keep your Summer EBT card, as future benefits will be added automatically if your child remains eligible

Together, Summer Meals and Summer EBT help ensure children have access to healthy food while school is out.

Visit SummerMealsNY.org in late June to find meal sites near you and learn more about Summer EBT.

As part of Mrs. Christine Beichner-Miller’s AP English 12 Legacy Project, Caroline Churchill and Charlotte Beaver set out to make a positive impact on younger students through a project called "How to Be a Healthy Hero." 💪🍎

Partnering with Mrs. Beaver’s third-grade class, the duo taught the importance of staying active, spending time outdoors, and making healthy food choices through fun, interactive lessons and activities. When they returned later in the project, they were excited to hear how the third graders had embraced their new healthy habits — from spending more time outside to trying new foods and staying active throughout the week.

To celebrate the students’ enthusiasm and participation, Caroline and Charlotte wrapped up the project with games, activities, and a quesadilla party. 🎉

Their project not only encouraged healthy lifestyles among younger students, but also demonstrated how a simple idea can create a meaningful and lasting impact.

Stay tuned as we continue highlighting more Legacy Projects and the unique ways members of the Class of 2026 are making a difference in their school and community!

Students in Mrs. Christine Beichner-Miller’s AP English 12 class recently presented their Legacy Projects, the culmination of months of reflection, research, and personal growth.

The Legacy Project challenges students to consider the impact they hope to leave on others and reflect on the experiences, values, and lessons that have shaped who they are. Through thoughtful and heartfelt presentations, members of the Class of 2026 shared personal stories, celebrated accomplishments, reflected on challenges they have overcome, and expressed gratitude for those who have influenced their lives.

To celebrate the completion of the project, students gathered for a longstanding tradition — a pancake breakfast with classmates and their teacher.

Over the coming days, we’ll be sharing a series of posts highlighting individual Legacy Projects and the unique stories, passions, and experiences that made each one special.

Congratulations to Mrs. Beichner-Miller and her students on an inspiring week of reflection, storytelling, and celebration!

The second-grade classes at Southwestern recently celebrated a month of learning during their Habitat Showcase! 🌎🦋🌲

Throughout May, students researched a habitat of their choice, took notes, wrote reports, learned to type their final copies in Microsoft Word, created habitat-themed artwork, practiced songs in music class, and completed detailed dioramas with support from their families.

On June 10, they proudly shared their projects and performances with loved ones, highlighting weeks of hard work, creativity, and discovery. The reports and dioramas were also displayed throughout the school for other classes to enjoy.

Congratulations to second grade teachers Mrs. Ehrman, Mrs. Lundberg, Mr. Lundmark, Mrs. Moss, and Miss Nelson for guiding this interdisciplinary learning experience.

Special thanks to Miss Cobb, Mr. Whitton, Mrs. Laurin, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Emley, Mrs. Soffel, Ms. Colletti, Mrs. Pickett, Mrs. VanSickle, Ms. Kendall, Mrs. Winters, Mrs. Marshall, Jacob Hinsdale, the custodial staff, and our students' families for helping make the event a success.

This afternoon, Southwestern’s fifth-grade students spent time with kindergarteners, creating graduation cap crafts featuring their future graduation years — 2033 for the fifth graders and 2038 for the kindergarteners. The visit also included story time, with the older students reading to their younger peers. ❤️

The idea grew from a conversation during Superintendent Molly Moore’s fifth-grade student advisory group. Students shared that they wished they could experience kindergarten again after their early elementary years were impacted by COVID.

Inspired by their thoughts, Mrs. Moore worked with kindergarten grade-level chair Dawn Gloss and fifth-grade grade-level chair Sue Waite, who collaborated with their teams to create this meaningful opportunity.

It was wonderful to see the students learning, creating, and enjoying time together as they built connections across grade levels. 📚🎓
