What a fantastic Day 2 of Junior Ranger Camp at Pickett State Park! 🌲☀️

Our Junior Rangers had an action-packed day full of outdoor adventure and hands-on learning. They enjoyed canoeing and boating on Pickett Lake, learned the basics of fire building using flint and steel under close supervision, practiced essential knot-tying skills, and hiked to Hazard Cave where they discovered fascinating critters like salamanders and crawfish.

To top it all off, everyone cooled off with a swim at our historic CCC beach!

It’s been wonderful watching these young explorers build confidence, learn new outdoor skills, and develop a deeper appreciation for nature.

What a great first day of Junior Ranger Camp at Pickett State Park! 🌲🐻🦉

Our Junior Rangers had a fun-filled day learning about some of Tennessee’s amazing wildlife. They discovered interesting facts about black bears, frogs and toads, and got to meet a corn snake and a prairie kingsnake up close.

One of the biggest highlights was meeting an Eastern Screech Owl and a Barn Owl. A big thank you to Cumberland Mountain State Park for bringing the birds of prey and sharing such a great program with our campers!

The group also enjoyed a short hike through the park and made animal tracks out of clay to take home as a reminder of their day.

We had a wonderful group of campers and are looking forward to another fun day of learning and adventure tomorrow!

The Glow Worms Are Back!

Did you know that right here in Tennessee, you can witness one of nature’s rarest light shows? Deep inside Hazard Cave, tiny glowing creatures light up the darkness like a starry sky.

These “glow worms” are actually the larvae of the fungus gnat Orfelia fultoni, the only bioluminescent fly species in North America 🌌

Join us for a short, easy hike, about a 1/2-mile round trip, to Hazard Cave, where you will get to see this incredible natural phenomenon up close. You must be on a ranger-led hike and reserve a spot to attend. It is a perfect adventure for families, nature lovers, and anyone looking for something truly unique.

Hikes are offered on weekends and select weekdays.
Reserve your spot here: https://tnstateparks.com/parks/pickett?fbclid=IwVERDUARmHo5leHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZAo2NjI4NTY4Mzc5AAEenvN4gHCWAqhQqV6p7r6KTq6qTRTeFkebtQYmTVrXNOk0ilSA3UIUX20iTbU_aem_VyQ4E4zfnkZGY-bwj8G2Vw
