Sixty years ago this September, the first METCO students boarded buses from Boston to suburban schools-launching a program that would transform generations.

That historic journey did not happen overnight. It took parents, students, educators, civil rights leaders, and community advocates speaking out against educational inequity, organizing, creating Operation Exodus, building coalitions, and refusing to accept that a child’s ZIP code should determine their opportunities.

In 1966, 280 students traveled to seven participating districts. Today, METCO continues to unite students, families, alumni, educators, and partner communities in the ongoing work of educational equity and opportunity.

As we celebrate 60 years, we honor the courage and determination of those who built this movement, the generations who carried it forward, and the young people shaping its future.

One METCO. Sixty years of breaking boundaries—and a lifetime of opportunity.

This summer, our K–6 students learned, created, explored, and achieved together through METCO’s 2026 Summer Academy!

Over four weeks, students participated in hands-on academic enrichment, creative activities, reading, field trips, and community-building experiences designed to keep them engaged and growing while school was out.

The impact went beyond the classroom. Students strengthened their skills, built confidence, discovered new interests, formed meaningful connections, and returned home better prepared for the school year ahead.

We’re proud to celebrate 100 students from 22 METCO districts, 150+ books read, and countless moments of curiosity, joy, and accomplishment.

Thank you to the educators, staff, families, and partners who made this enriching summer possible. Take a look at the highlights and celebrate our Summer Academy scholars with us!

Our METCO Youth Council recently welcomed Dr. Rachel Deleveaux, who shared her educational journey from high school to earning her doctorate-including the challenges she faced and the lessons that helped her overcome them.

Students asked real questions and received real-time wisdom and coaching on problem-solving, decision-making, and navigating challenges with confidence.

Thank you, Dr. Rachel, for pouring into our students and reminding them that their journey is full of possibilities!
