Hurricane season starts today.

The image on the cover of the new City of Jacksonville Preparedness & Response Guide captures an Emergency Road Access Team (ERAT) response, which brings JFRD, JEA, and JSO personnel together to help our community respond, recover, and restore access after a disaster.

Our personnel train for these scenarios year-round.

While emergency responders prepare for disasters every day, now is the time for residents to prepare as well. Take a few minutes to review your plans, check your supplies, and make sure you’re ready before the next storm is on the radar.

Who won the kickball game? We’ll let you decide that one.

Last week, crews from Station 55 and Atlantic Beach Police helped wrap up the school year with a kickball showdown against students at Atlantic Beach Elementary. Safe to say everyone brought the energy, but it looks like the students may have had a slight advantage.

Happy first day of summer break Duval County students! Stay safe and have fun this summer☀️

Blink and R-126 is already halfway up the ladder.

Since April 7, these recruits have been climbing, training, learning, and getting a firsthand look at the pace JFRD runs daily.

Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice, courage, and commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy each day.

Today, and every day, we honor those who never made it home.

Holiday weekends may change the pace for most people, but that doesn’t mean emergencies stop across Jacksonville.

Saturday afternoon, JFRD crews responded to a commercial structure fire in the Pine Forest area that also affected an adjacent residential property. Personnel worked aggressively to bring the fire under control, ventilate the structure, and prevent further damage. One resident was displaced and is receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

As the long weekend continues, stay safe, Jacksonville. JFRD crews remain ready to respond if you need us.

Every day, JFRD personnel step into situations most people hope they never experience.

For the final conversation in our EMS Week 2026 series, we asked local hospital providers:
What would you want the community to understand about the people responding to these calls every day?

Their answers offer a reminder that behind every uniform is someone showing up for others during difficult moments.

As EMS Week comes to a close, we also want to thank our community for helping us recognize and celebrate these professionals and the work they do across Jacksonville every day.

While many people spend Memorial Day weekend relaxing near the water, JFRD Ocean Rescue Lifeguards will be standing by at Hanna and Huguenot parks to help keep residents and visitors safe.

There is a high risk of rip currents at local beaches throughout the holiday weekend, creating dangerous conditions even for experienced swimmers.

If you plan to enjoy the unofficial start of summer at the beach, keep these safety tips in mind:
🏊‍♂️ Swim within your physical abilities
🛟 Always swim near a lifeguard. Accidents can happen even to strong swimmers
👀 Designate a Water Watcher to keep an eye on children
🌊 If caught in a rip current, stay calm and swim parallel to shore
🧴 Protect your skin from the sun

Have fun, stay aware, and in case of emergency, call 911!

Behind every EMS call is a team effort that starts long before a patient reaches the hospital.

Yesterday, JFRD personnel Captain Nail, Captain Sheehan, and Lieutenant Welch were recognized by HCA Florida Memorial Hospital for their outstanding efforts and dedication to patient care. Moments like this highlight the strong partnership between first responders and the healthcare teams who continue that care inside our hospitals every day.

Throughout EMS Week, healthcare partners across Jacksonville have taken time to recognize and support our personnel, and we are grateful for the collaboration, trust, and shared commitment to serving this community.

Thank you to all of our local hospitals, nurses, physicians, and healthcare professionals for the work you do alongside us every day.

Training for Jacksonville means preparing for emergencies on the water just as much as on land.

Last month, members of JFRD’s Hazardous Materials Team took part in an Offshore Hazmat /Technical Rescue course focused on boat-to-boat transfers and emergency response scenarios in marine environments.

JFRD Personnel trained alongside partners from St. Johns, Clay, Volusia, and Brevard counties, strengthening coordination and response capabilities across multiple agencies.

From hazardous materials considerations to the challenges of operating between vessels on the water, this type of joint training helps prepare crews for complex incidents that require technical skills, communication, and teamwork.

With one of the busiest ports in the region and more than 1,100 miles of shoreline across Jacksonville, this type of knowledge is especially valuable to the community we serve.

By continuing to expand capabilities, JFRD personnel remain prepared to protect Jacksonville in every environment they may be called to operate in.

There is a side of EMS the public may never fully see.

For EMS Week 2026, we asked local hospital providers:
Can you describe a moment or quality that stands out about the way JFRD personnel care for patients?

Their answers highlight the professionalism, compassion, and trust built between JFRD personnel and hospital teams every day.

This is the second of three conversations we’re sharing throughout EMS Week 2026.
