🌛Half Moon VFD – Week in review 📆

Another strong and productive week serving our community, sharpening our skills, maintaining our equipment, and sharing important safety information. Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening around the station this week…

🔥 Fire Service Fun Fact:
Did you know that the modern fire hydrant’s exact inventor is unknown? The patent records were reportedly destroyed in a fire at the U.S. Patent Office in 1836. Ironically, one of the most important tools firefighters use today has an origin story that was literally lost to a fire!

🏠 Knowledge Drop - Fire Prevention Starts with Electrical Safety:
One of the leading causes of residential fires is electrical malfunction. Help keep your family safe by:
✅ Avoiding overloaded outlets and power strips
✅ Replacing damaged or frayed cords
✅ Having electrical work completed by qualified professionals
✅ Testing smoke alarms monthly

A few minutes of prevention today can help prevent a devastating fire tomorrow.

🪜 Training Update:
This week’s training focused on ground ladder awareness, applications, care, and maintenance. Members reviewed ladder types, proper placement techniques, safety considerations, and inspection procedures to ensure our equipment remains ready when needed. These knowledge and familiarization drills while reinforcing the fundamentals that help us operate safely and efficiently on the fire ground.

We also completed a thorough inspection and operational check of on Tanker Truck 507, Brush Truck 510, and Squad 514, ensuring the apparatus and equipment remain ready to respond when our community needs us most.

Staying prepared means we’re ready when you need us most.

🌦️Weather Outlook:
The Jacksonville area is expected to see a hot and humid stretch this week, with temperatures climbing into the mid-to-upper 90s by Thursday and Friday. Thunderstorm chances increase heading into the weekend, with scattered storms possible Saturday and Sunday. Remember to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat, and have a plan for severe weather if storms develop.

We want to thank you for your continued love and support. Your trust, encouragement, and generosity make it possible for us to serve our community the way we do.❤️

🌟 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT 🌟

Today we’re proud to shine the spotlight on Firefighter Tim Wisen for his dedication and service with the Half Moon Volunteer Fire Department and also welcome him back home!👨‍🚒🔥

Tim has been a member of the Half Moon Volunteer Fire Department for 1 year and 9 months (Sep 2024) and has also faithfully served our nation in the United States Marine Corps for the past 6.5 years. After completing a year long overseas deployment, we're excited to have him back home and back with his HMVFD family!🇺🇸

When asked what he enjoys most about serving, Tim shared that he values the opportunity to make a difference in someone's worst day and be a person people can turn to when they need help the most. That servant's heart is exactly what makes him such a valuable member of our department. ❤️

Outside of the station, When Tim is off duty, you can usually find him lifting weights, playing rugby, or enjoying time with his family. 💪🏉🧑‍🧑‍🧒

His favorite tools on the fireground? The versatile Halligan bar, a firefighter's best friend when it comes to forcible entry and rescue operations. 🛠️

Fun Fact: 🔹Tim serves as a Special Olympics powerlifting coach, helping athletes achieve their goals and build confidence through strength training.

Please join us in thanking Tim for his service to both our community and our country, and help us give him a warm Half Moon welcome home!🇺🇸

Welcome home Tim, and thank you for your dedication, sacrifice, and service!👏👨‍🚒

🌛Half Moon VFD – Week in review 📆

Another strong and productive week serving our community, sharpening our skills, maintaining our equipment, and sharing important safety information. Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening around the station this week:

🚒 Fire Service Fun Fact:
America’s 1st Volunteer Fire Company
In 1736, Benjamin Franklin helped establish the Union Fire Company in Philadelphia, one of the first organized volunteer fire companies in America. Members supplied their own equipment and worked together to protect their community, much like volunteer firefighters continue to do today!

💧 Knowledge Drop – Why Fire Hydrant Water Pressure Matters:
When firefighters connect to a hydrant, we’re not just looking for water we’re looking for adequate pressure and volume. Proper hydrant pressure ensures enough water reaches our engines and hose lines to effectively suppress a fire. Low pressure can limit firefighting operations, while strong water systems help us deliver the large amounts of water needed during emergencies. That’s one reason fire hydrants are regularly tested and maintained throughout our community.

Training & Operations: 🛠️
This week, our members spent time sharpening essential firefighting skills through hands-on training focused on:
✅ Hose streams and nozzle operations
✅ Appliances and hose connections
✅ Hose pulls and deployment techniques

The evening provided valuable knowledge and familiarization training while reinforcing the fundamentals that help us operate safely and efficiently on the fireground. Additionally, our members also completed a thorough inspection and operational check of Engine 504, ensuring the apparatus and equipment remain ready to respond when our community needs us most.

Staying prepared means we’re ready when you need us most.

🌤️ Weather Outlook:
Jacksonville is looking at a wet start to the week with rain expected Monday, followed by several days of sunshine and comfortable temperatures in the mid-70s. By the end of the week and into the weekend, temperatures will climb into the upper 80s. As the warmer weather returns, remember to stay hydrated, check on outdoor pets, and use caution when working outside during the hottest parts of the day.

We want to thank you for your continued love and support. Your trust, encouragement, and generosity make it possible for us to serve our community the way we do.❤️

🚗👶 Child Passenger Safety Month Reminder 👶🚗

As we near the end of Child Passenger Safety Month, Half Moon VFD would like to remind everyone of the importance of ensuring your children are riding safely every time they travel.

Did you know that properly installed car seats can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury in a crash? Unfortunately, many car seats are installed incorrectly, which can limit their effectiveness when they’re needed most.

✅ Make sure your child’s car seat is appropriate for their age, weight, and height.
✅ Check that harnesses are snug and properly positioned.
✅ Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions carefully.
✅ Have your car seat inspected by a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.

Need help? Many local fire stations serve as certified car seat inspection stations. Here in Jacksonville, all Jacksonville Fire Department stations have certified personnel available to assist with car seat checks and answer your questions.

Taking a few minutes to verify your child’s car seat today could make all the difference tomorrow.

Stay safe and have a great weekend all!

🌛Half Moon VFD – Week in review 📆

As we celebrate Memorial Day this week, your Half Moon Volunteer Fire Department would like to take a moment to reflect, recharge, and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. 🇺🇸

🌊🚒 Fire Service Fun Fact:
Did you know swift water rescue incidents can occur in as little as 6 inches of moving water? Fast moving water is incredibly powerful and unpredictable, which is why specially trained rescue teams use techniques, ropes, flotation devices, and protective gear to safely operate during flood and water emergencies. Remember: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

🏖️ Knowledge Drop – Beach & Water Safety:
With summer celebrations kicking off, many families will be heading to the beach and waterways this weekend. Remember:
• Always swim near a lifeguard when possible
• Never turn your back on the ocean
• Watch for rip current warnings
• Keep children within arm’s reach near water
• Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen during prolonged outdoor activities
A fun day at the beach starts with safety first! ☀️🌊

🛠️Training & Operations:
This weekend our members took some well deserved time to relax, recover, and spend time with family. Even during quieter weekends, our volunteers remain ready to respond whenever the community calls. We appreciate the dedication of our members who continue balancing service, family, and work commitments year-round.

🇺🇸 Memorial Day Reflection:
This Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. We also remember the fallen firefighters, first responders, and public servants who answered their final call in service to others. Please take a moment this weekend to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of their courage and sacrifice.

🌦️Weather Outlook:
Looks like a warm and unsettled week ahead for the Jacksonville area, with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s through midweek along with scattered chances for thunderstorms. By the weekend, cooler temperatures and rain chances move in, so keep an eye on the forecast if you have outdoor Memorial Day plans.

We want to thank you for your continued love and support. Your trust, encouragement, and generosity make it possible for us to serve our community the way we do.❤️

📅 This Day in History ~ May 21, 1917

On this day in 1917, the “Great Atlanta Fire” broke out in Atlanta, GA becoming one of the largest urban fires in American history. Fueled by strong winds, dry conditions, and wooden-shingle rooftops, the fire burned for nearly 10 hours, destroying more than 1,900 buildings and leaving over 10,000 people homeless.

At the time, firefighters faced enormous challenges with limited equipment, water supply demands, and rapidly spreading fire conditions. The tragedy helped shape modern fire prevention efforts, building codes, and urban firefighting tactics that departments still benefit from today.

More than 100 years later, the fire service continues to learn from incidents like these reminding us why training, preparedness, teamwork, and community support matter every single day.

Today, we honor the firefighters and citizens who faced this historic disaster with courage and resilience. 🚒 👨‍🚒
