Northeast Florida educators are invited to join us on our upcoming Teacher’s Night, an evening at the Frisch Family Holocaust Memorial Gallery. The program will include networking, a tour of our current exhibit, “Fighting Antisemitism: From Dreyfus to Today”; and a presentation from a member of our Speakers Bureau.

We’ll have teaching trunks on display and will walk everyone through all of the resources we have to offer, followed by an open discussion with attending educators and our partners from The Florida Holocaust Museum about how we can help YOU teach the Holocaust. Lite bites will be served.

Did You Know?

In a recent survey of adults under 40, 63% did not know that six million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. In fact, more than 1 in 10 of those surveyed did not know the word “Holocaust” at all. The LJD Jewish Family & Community Services (JFCS) is working to increase knowledge surrounding this deeply tragic time in history through our Holocaust Education program. This initiative is designed to assist Northeast Florida educators in teaching their students about the Holocaust.

FIGHTING ANTISEMITISM: A HISTORY THAT STILL SPEAKS TO THE PRESENT

Last night, we opened our newest exhibition, Fighting Antisemitism: From Dreyfus to Today, now on view at the Frisch Family Holocaust Memorial Gallery at The LJD Jewish Family & Community Services. Visitors had a powerful look at more than a century of efforts to confront antisemitism through journalism, advocacy, legal action, documentation, organizing, and resistance.

Beginning with the Dreyfus Affair of the 1890s, the exhibition traces how antisemitic stereotypes, accusations, and misinformation have persisted across generations. Archival newspapers, photographs, posters, and other materials reflect a history that is deeply familiar, while also highlighting the people who refused to let those forces go unchallenged.

Also on display is a purpose-built extension gallery, developed in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), that carries that resistance across the Atlantic and into the present. Showcasing real-time data from the ADL’s Audit of Antisemitic Incidents, now in its 46th year, visitors move from archival history directly into news that is actively being written.

📣COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: “WHEN THE RABBIS CAME TO TOWN” DEBUTS AT THE WATERWORKS 📣

Guests who have previously experienced our “We Could Not Be Silent” exhibit will recognize the history, memory, and moral courage that come together in "When The Rabbis Came to Town", a world premiere stage performance honoring Rabbi Allen Secher.

On June 17, 1964, Rabbi Secher answered an emergency appeal from Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and traveled to St. Augustine to join civil rights protests facing violent attacks, fire bombings, and death threats. The next day, he and 15 fellow rabbis were arrested during a prayer service at the segregated Monson Motel, marking the largest arrest of rabbis in American history.

This powerful performance features actor Adam Bell portraying Rabbi Secher’s eight-decade fight against racism and antisemitism. Immediately following, the two will take the stage for a discussion reflecting on Rabbi Secher’s arrest, his lifelong human rights work, and his continued commitment to confronting hate.

In addition to the 6pm performance, a private reception with Rabbi Secher will be held at The Waterworks at noon the same day. Reservations are required, and space is limited to 30 guests.

Thank you to Ridgeview High School for welcoming us for a meaningful day of learning and reflection. Andrew shared his grandparents’ story, offering students a powerful and personal connection to the history and lasting impact of the Holocaust.

Students also explored our traveling exhibit, We Could Not Be Silent — a graphic novel that tells the story of a pivotal moment during the Civil Rights Movement right here in Northeast Florida, highlighting the importance of allyship and the role individuals can play in standing up against injustice.

Following last week’s cattle car exhibit on campus, these experiences together created a powerful opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of history and its relevance today.

We appreciate the Ridgeview community for creating space for these important conversations.
