This work is accomplished by:
-Helping faculty members integrate and utilize service learning as a teaching and learning strategy for achieving student success;
-Supporting students so they have opportunities to succeed academically, professionally and civically; and
-Fostering collaboration with community partners by facilitating, supporting and promoting activities that address social needs and
issues. What is Service Learning? Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with academic learning goals and critical reflection to enrich the student learning experience and teach civic responsibility. Service learning is considered a high-impact educational practice by the American Association of Colleges and Universities. How Does Service Learning Benefit Students, Faculty, and the Community?
-Service learning engages students in the course materials, contributes to their personal and career development, promotes civic participation, and strengthens FSCJ's relationship with our local community. Students who participate in service learning gain skills in critical thinking, communication, and teamwork. Students develop civic responsibility.
-Faculty have the opportunity to infuse new energy into teaching and learning. They can engage students in course content, thereby creating more dynamic, interactive learning experiences.
-Community members have the ability to facilitate relationships with FSCJ that create a pipeline of potential future volunteers, employees, and donors.
