This Saturday: Put down the phone and look up! 🐦

Birding has a wonderful way of making you notice things you might normally walk right past — a flash of movement in the trees, a call you’ve heard a hundred times but never identified, or birds traveling through Jacksonville on journeys much bigger than our own backyard.

Join us this Saturday, September 12, for Birding 101: Birds Are Everywhere at Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park.

We’ll spend the morning learning a few simple tools and techniques before heading outside for a guided birding walk together.

A day off calls for a day outside. 🌿

This Labor Day, skip the usual plans and explore a little more of Jacksonville’s wild side:

🥾 Hike the trails at Theodore Roosevelt Area
🛶 Launch a kayak and explore the salt marsh at Castaway Island Preserve
🎣 Find a spot along the St. Johns River at Reddie Point Preserve
🌊 Head toward the coast for a walk at one of the Talbot Islands parks
🐦 Grab your binoculars and see what’s moving through the marsh

One week until Birding 101! 🐦

Have you ever heard a bird call and wondered, What IS that? Or spotted something in the trees and wished you knew what you were looking at?

Next Saturday, we’re heading to Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park to help you find out.

During Birding 101: Birds Are Everywhere, you’ll learn the basics of birding, including how to use binoculars, identify birds with the Merlin Bird ID app and its Sound ID feature, and explore BirdCast to see what migration looks like along Jacksonville’s Atlantic Flyway.

Then we’ll head out for a guided walk and see what we can find together.

We’re teaming up with St. Johns Riverkeeper for the Protect Our Public Lands Passport Challenge, and we want to see how many incredible public lands YOU can explore this month.

Birding 101 is coming to Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park! 🐦

Join Timucuan Parks Foundation for Birding 101: Birds Are Everywhere, a beginner-friendly morning designed to help you slow down, tune in and discover the birds already all around us.

🔞 Designed for adults ages 18+

We’ll learn how to use binoculars and a field guide, explore tools like the Merlin Bird ID app and BirdCast, and then head outside for a guided birding walk to put it all into practice.

Protecting Public Lands 🤝 Preserving Clean Water

We’re celebrating National Public Lands Day throughout the month of September with St. Johns Riverkeeper! The Protect Our Public Lands Passport challenges you to visit as many public lands as you can throughout the St. Johns River watershed.

📍 Our Land: There are 50+ parks, springs and public lands to stamp on your passport!

💧Our Water: Public Lands are vital to maintaining healthy waterways. Each park is connected to the same watershed!

Use your digital passport to check in to each park using geolocation or a photo, and earn prizes when you visit 5, 10 and 20 locations! Florida Springs Council, Timucuan Parks Foundation & Northside Pride are also giving out prizes for visiting locations in their own unique categories.

There’s something special about experiencing the outdoors after dark. 🌙🌲

Blue Star Families military families and friends recently joined Timucuan Parks Foundation and Ranger Stephen for an evening adventure at Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park.

The 1.5 to 2 mile ranger-guided walk wound through maritime forest, around the lake and out to the beach as daylight slowly faded into total darkness. Along the way, the group stopped to look, listen, and learn — spotting birds on the lake, a banana spider along the trail, and even a loggerhead sea turtle nest on the beach.

And the wildlife wasn’t done yet! Several barred owls called out during the evening, and one family even managed to snap a photo of one on their way out of the park. 🦉

The night wrapped up back at Parking Lot 8, where members of the Northeast Florida Astronomical Society (NEFAS) had telescopes ready for a look at the night sky. 🔭✨

Thank you to Blue Star Families, Ranger Stephen, and NEFAS for helping us share an unforgettable evening!

Join Friends of Talbot Islands State Parks on September 26 for a full day celebrating the incredible natural and cultural resources of the Talbot Islands.

There’s something for the whole family — including guided hikes, birding and native plant walks, kayak rides, a kids fishing clinic, arts and crafts, wildlife and archaeology activities, local conservation exhibitors, live music, food, a silent auction and more!
