Today, we recognize and honor Juneteenth. Annually commemorated on June 19, Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States.

Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, it could not be implemented in states still under Confederate control. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrives in Galveston Texas, where Major General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, announcing the freedom of enslaved African Americans.

First known as Emancipation Day, Juneteenth was celebrated as early as 1866 in Galveston. It became a Texas state holiday in 1979 and was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.
