A recent investigative 🔍 report from the Miami Herald 📰 proves just how much . The article notes that in 2016, the Trump campaign used a computer algorithm to analyze voters’ personal data — social media posts, credit card 💳purchases, and the like - and used it to send African Americans messages designed to prevent them from voting. In Miami-Dade county, Trump’s team targeted 116,000 Black people - roughly half of all Black voters in the county. Hillary Clinton lost Florida by just 119,770 votes.

On this Throwback Thursday, we honor a pioneer in 🗳voting rights. Ms. Fannie Lou Hamer was born in Mississippi and worked as a sharecropper. As the Civil Rights Movement ⚖️ grew, Ms. Hamer became an active participant. In 1962, she was fired from the farm where she worked after she tried - and failed - to register to vote. Undeterred, Ms. Hamer dedicated herself to registering other Black Mississippians. For her efforts, Ms. Hamer was arrested, attacked, humiliated, and beaten so severely that she had to be hospitalized for a month. A co-founder of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, Hamer spoke passionately at the 1964 Democratic Convention.

Every African American who has the right to vote owes a debt of gratitude to Fannie Lou Hamer and the other activists who made this right a reality.

As the holiday season approaches full swing, many people are looking for ways to help others. Here in Jacksonville, many 🍲 🥦 🌽 food banks report that donations are down while need has increased. African American families - in Jacksonville and elsewhere - are more likely to struggle with poverty, hunger, and food insecurity.

If you are able, please take a moment to donate time or goods to one of the many wonderful agencies in North Florida that provide resources to families in need.

African Americans comprise 30% of the Jacksonville population. Yet, recent studies of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) found that just 12% of the police officers in the city are African American. The problems are worse at the senior ranks. Just 6.9% of JSO sergeants are Black men (compared to 87.7% being White men) while only four of the JSO’s 60 lieutenants are African American men. (Fifty of the 60 are white.)

Black Jacksonvillians have the power to vote for leaders who will ensure that we are protected by a police force that reflects the diversity of our city and understands the unique needs of our community.

Single-parent families are often blamed for the problems faced by the African American community. Yet, a 2️⃣0️⃣1️⃣7️⃣ study found that 30% of African American children in Duval County who live in two-parent homes also live in poverty. While this poverty rate is lower than the rate for single-parent families, it proves that poverty is not the fault of individuals, but of systems ⚖️ 🎓🏩 . These systems often harm people of color.

Black Jax Pac exists to support candidates that will help change these systems so that African American children and families can grow and thrive.

The outcome of the Georgia U.S.🇺🇸 Senate races will affect many issues that matter to the African American community, including:

-The expansion of healthcare (Obamacare);
- Federal spending 💸for programs such as SNAP and Head Start;
- Federal criminal law ⚖️ and policy;
- The appointment of federal judges 🧑‍⚖️;
- And many, many more.
