Volunteer Life Saving Corps

Volunteer Life Saving Corps The Volunteer Life Saving Corps was the first volunteer lifeguard organization in the U.S., founded in 1912. A new concrete Station was built in 1920.

In 1914, it was chartered by the American Red Cross, and the Corps was renamed the American Red Cross Volunteer Life Saving Corps. The corps has always operated out of a Station at the end of Beach Boulevard. The first Station was a small wooden barn that housed a mule cart used to carry the corps’ rescue dory. That building included first-aid rooms, locker rooms, showers, offices, and a dormitory

. It also included a 70-foot mast, called “The Peg,” from which guards could watch the beach. After serving the Corps for three decades, that building was replaced by the current American Red Cross Station, which was constructed between 1945 and 1947. The current American Red Cross Station is a National Historic Landmark. You can view more information about our Station at https://www.nps.gov/nr/feature/places/14000187.htm.

This past Saturday, a handful of our members volunteered in their individual capacities as part of the Ironman water-safety team, alongside other volunteer kayakers, boaters, JSO, JFRD, Clay County Sheriffs, Coast Guard, and many others.

From the ceremonial surf dory lead out to supporting athletes on the course, it was another reminder that lifesaving skills go beyond the beach.

Proud of our members for showing up wherever the water calls. 🌊

This was not a VLSC-sponsored or VLSC-operated event.

A proud night at the Pulido Farm celebrating Marco Pulido as he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. An achievement built on years of dedication, leadership, service, character, and commitment to others.

Marco is not only an incredible waterman and young leader, but also serves within the VLSC as our Quartermaster. The same discipline, responsibility, and servant leadership it takes to become an Eagle Scout are the very qualities he brings to our organization and our mission.

Pictured with Marco are his father, Danny Pulido, VLSC Medical Director; his sister Lucia Pulido, a VLSC Surfman; Past Captain Kline; Retired Member Andy Mac; and Past Captain Richard McDill. Congratulations, Marco! Your VLSC family is proud of you. 🦅👏
