We also extend our sincere congratulations to Fire Inspector Tyler Whitehead of the Jackson Fire Department, who was selected as the 2026 Fire Instructor of the Year.

This award is particularly meaningful because it is chosen by the students themselves. Fire Inspector Whitehead was recognized for his exceptional leadership, extensive knowledge, passion for the fire service, dedication to mentoring future firefighters, and his willingness to consistently go above and beyond to ensure student success.

đźš’On Saturday, June 13, the Jackson County Fire Chiefs Association proudly celebrated the graduation of the 2026 Jackson County Fire Academy. The academy began in January and concluded in late May, providing recruits with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on training necessary to serve their communities as firefighters.

The Jackson Fire Department extends its congratulations to the 13 graduates who successfully completed the academy and are now joining the ranks of the fire service throughout our region. These new firefighters represent the following departments:

• Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety
• Summit Township Fire Department
• Napoleon Township, MI Police & Fire Departments
• Stockbridge Area Emergency Services Authority
• Jonesville Fire Department, Jonesville Michigan
• Parma-Sandstone Fire Department

The Jackson Fire Department is proud of all the academy graduates and grateful to the instructors, officers, and partner departments who contributed to another successful academy. We wish these new firefighters safe and rewarding careers as they begin serving their communities.

Chief Tim Gonzales and Assistant Chief Joe Smith met with Kathy Schmaltz - State Representative on Wednesday, June 3, following Chief Gonzales’ testimony before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity.

During the hearing, Chief Gonzales advocated for LDSI funding to support the construction of a new training facility to replace the aging training tower at the Jackson Fire Department.

Representative Schmaltz has been a steadfast supporter of the Jackson Fire Department and public safety initiatives throughout her district. We are grateful for her continued leadership and advocacy in championing this important project, which will enhance training opportunities and improve preparedness for first responders across Jackson County.
