Meet the Artist — Brejenn Allen

“I realized Mississippi fed my spirit and gave me strength to fly away. So, I’ll always fly back.”

Brejenn Allen is a Mississippi-based visual artist whose practice captures the African American experience in the South by depicting her everyday life and overlooked objects through painting, and mixed media. She layers traditional painting with impasto texture, subtle abstraction, and the nuance of found objects to emphasize resilience and rest as resistance and to provide an honest counterpart to the trendy stereotypes of Southern life.

Meet the Artist: Christy Meshel

“Mississippi is the first language I ever learned —the rhythm, the stories, the people. Everything I create still speaks with that accent.”

Working across painting, textiles, handwritten text,
and installation, Christy Meshel’s practice explores themes of memory, migration, identity, and belonging. Drawing from Black Southern storytelling traditions, personal narrative, and her experience in immigration law, Meshel creates layered works that examine how place, ancestry, and lived experience shape our understanding of self.
