Great information for everyone to think about.

Create an Evacuation Loading Zone! When every second counts, having a safe place to load animals can make all the difference during a disaster or emergency. Can a trailer easily turn around in your driveway to evacuate animals?

Here's our quick checklist for creating an evacuation loading zone:
✔️ Gravel area with non-slip, level surface and turning radius to accommodate trailer
✔️ Electric or solar light source to light area
✔️ Free of debris, sharp edges – ideally 20-30 ft clearance
✔️ Clear of branches, wind driven debris
✔️ Adjacent to holding paddocks or pens
✔️ Access to hose to wet down bedding

What’s your Red Flag Day Routine for Barn Preparedness?

Creating a routine to practice if there’s a Red Flag warning in your area can make all the difference for you and your animals if a disaster strikes.

Here are a few steps to help create a routine to help become better prepared in case of an emergency:

✔️ Ensure hoses are hooked up at nearby spigot
✔️ Fire alarms placed at both ends of your barn
✔️ Test fire extinguishers and be sure you understand how to deploy them
✔️ Make sure aisles and rafters are clear of ladder fuels
✔️ Hay is stored separate from barn as it burns hot & requires more water to extinguish
✔️ Ensure barn door is intact to shut barn down so that horses cannot return to it
✔️ Maintain current electrical wiring and fixtures
✔️ Evacuation plan(s) and emergency contacts are posted
✔️ Defensible space on property to secure animals if evacuation is not possible.
✔️ Room for fire vehicles and large trailers are able to enter and turn around on property

The Gann Fire is finally over — and now it’s time to prepare for the next call.

After a busy response assisting with the Gann Fire, E.T.A. needs more volunteers from both Amador AND Calaveras counties! We are based in Amador County and regularly assist our neighbors in Calaveras when animals need help during disasters.

Gann Fire Response — Neighbors Helping Neighbors ❤️🐴🐐🐑

As the Gann Fire impacted Calaveras County, E.T.A. Evacuation Teams of Amador was called to assist — and our volunteers went to work.

At the direction of Amador County OES and CAL FIRE, E.T.A. worked alongside Calaveras County Animal Control, helping evacuate livestock and pets from threatened areas. While a small number of animals were sheltered at the E.T.A. Evacuation Center, much of our work took place in the field — going where we were needed and helping get animals out safely.

Our work didn’t stop with evacuation. Volunteers also conducted welfare checks on animals that remained behind, making sure they had food and water and were cared for while their owners were displaced.

The photos in this album show only a small part of what happens during an animal evacuation — catching and loading animals, transporting them to safety, feeding, watering, checking properties and caring for animals until the danger passes.

THANK YOU to our E.T.A. volunteers who answered the call, worked in the heat and kept going wherever they were needed. We are incredibly grateful for the cooperation and teamwork of Calaveras County Animal Control, Amador County OES, CAL FIRE and all of the agencies and responders working the Gann Fire.

And to the animal owners who trusted us with their animals during an incredibly stressful time — thank you for putting your trust in our teams.

This is why we train. This is why we prepare. And this is why E.T.A. is here. 💙
