Today, the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus proudly joins millions across our nation in celebrating Juneteenth, the day that marks the final enforcement of freedom for enslaved African Americans in the United States.

Juneteenth is more than a commemoration of history; it is a celebration of resilience, perseverance, faith, and the enduring pursuit of liberty. We honor the generations who endured unimaginable hardship, fought for justice, and paved the way for the opportunities we enjoy today.

As we reflect on the significance of this day, let us recommit ourselves to building a Mississippi and a nation where freedom, opportunity, and justice are not aspirations for some, but realities for all.

May we never forget the sacrifices that brought us here, and may we continue the work of ensuring that the promise of freedom reaches every community and every generation.

Today, I want to recognize two outstanding members of the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus, Representative Zakiya Summers and Senator Kamesha Mumford, for their unwavering leadership and commitment to protecting the health, dignity, and personal freedoms of Mississippi women and families.

At a time when many rights once thought settled are being questioned, these two leaders have demonstrated courage by elevating an important conversation about access to contraception and reproductive health care. Their advocacy is not simply about policy—it is about ensuring that individuals and families have the ability to make personal health care decisions for themselves.

Representative Summers has consistently championed the Mississippi Right to Contraception Act, working to provide state-level protections and certainty for Mississippians. Senator Mumford has been a strong voice in raising awareness about the potential challenges facing reproductive rights and the importance of remaining vigilant in protecting access to health care.

Leadership is often measured not by the issues that are easy to discuss, but by the willingness to engage in difficult conversations that impact people’s lives. Representative Summers and Senator Mumford have done just that.

The Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus is proud of their advocacy, their conviction, and their dedication to ensuring that every Mississippian has access to the information, resources, and health care they need.

Today, my heart is heavy as I mourn the passing of my friend, colleague, and fellow public servant, Representative William “Bo” Brown.

Bo was a dedicated advocate for his community, a respected voice in the Mississippi Legislature, and a man who cared deeply about the people he was elected to serve. His commitment to public service, his wisdom, and his steady presence will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

On behalf of the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus, I extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, constituents, and loved ones. We pray that God grants them strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time.

Representative Brown leaves behind a legacy of service that will not be forgotten. May we honor his life by continuing the work of building stronger communities and serving others with the same dedication he demonstrated throughout his life.
