It was as a public school teacher that I developed my appreciation for the magnitude of the challenges faced by teachers and administrators of public schools.

Public schools are a mirror of democracy, with all its graces and failures. EVERYONE is invited to participate, which makes for many differing wants and needs, and many routes to try to meet the needs of the students and wider community. Sometimes it’s a mess, but always there are good intentions. Administrators, teachers, and the community want what is best for students.

I’m still a teacher at heart, and a full-on fan of the ideas forming public school systems: a good education and safe space provided by sufficient public funds, for every child in the district, taught by human teachers who respect and support ALL their students.

And, school teachers are super heroes!
