Today is Overdose Awareness Day! Today, we come together to honor those we've lost to overdose, support those who are fighting substance use challenges, and spread the critical message that overdose deaths can be prevented.

Carrying Narcan (naloxone) can save a life. This life-saving medication can be administered by anyone during an overdose emergency. We encourage everyone to have Narcan on hand, whether at home, in your car, or with you throughout the day. Every second counts in an overdose situation, and being prepared could make all the difference.

The Breathitt County Health Department offers free Narcan to community members. Visit us to get equipped and learn how you can make a lifesaving impact.

What You Need to Know About Measles:
Measles is a highly contagious illness, but knowing the signs and how it spreads can help keep our families and community informed. ❤️
🤒 Symptoms to watch for:
• Fever
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Red, watery eyes
• A rash that usually starts on the face and spreads downward
🦠 How does measles spread?
Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes. It can spread very easily to people who are not protected.
💉 The best protection is vaccination.
The routine recommendation for the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is:
• 1st dose: 12–15 months of age
• 2nd dose: 4–6 years of age

Lyme disease is more than just a tick bite—it can have lasting effects on your health if it's not caught and treated early.
The good news is that prevention goes a long way. When spending time outdoors:
- Wear long sleeves and pants when possible.
- Use an EPA-registered insect repellent.
- Stay on marked trails and avoid tall grass and brush.
- Check yourself, your children, and your pets for ticks after being outside.
- Shower soon after coming indoors and wash outdoor clothing.
Knowing what to look for can make a difference. If you develop a rash, fever, fatigue, or joint pain after a tick bite, contact a healthcare provider promptly.

The Breathitt County Health Department is accepting applications for a part-time Breastfeeding Peer Counselor.
Apply at https://KOG.CHFS.KY.GOV/HOME.
-Create a citizen’s account and search LHDCOS (search and apply)
-Completed application must be submitted by Aug 21, 2026.
-Transcripts must be provided before the close date if post-secondary education is required or may be substituted for experience.
-Has been or currently is a WIC participant.
-Has successfully breastfed an infant for 6 months or longer and is an advocate for breastfeeding.
-Has the ability to work independently at home; Has basic -computer skills in the use of email and common Word documents.
-Has the ability to communicate effectively with peers, supervisors and other health department staff.
-Has reliable transportation; and Is readily accessible by phone.
-Qualified applicants/employees are subject to a pre-screening, selection for interview, and/or demonstration of skills testing.
-Employment may be contingent upon a successful drug screening and background check.

Here's how we help Jimothy, all his wild neighbors, and your family stay safe:
🚫 Admire wildlife from a distance. No petting, no feeding, no cornering them for the perfect video.
📞 See a sick, injured, or wild animal behaving strangely? Don't approach: call your local animal control or wildlife agency.
🐾 Keep pets up to date on rabies vaccines.

On Aug. 13, 2026, Kentucky health officials confirmed a case of measles in Christian County. This is the first confirmed case of measles in a Kentucky resident since January.

The individual was not vaccinated against measles and is believed to have been exposed through contact with an out-of-state visitor from a community with an ongoing measles outbreak.

Additional unconfirmed reports of measles have led health officials to suspect an outbreak.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can cause serious health complications, especially in young children. Vaccination is the best protection against measles. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe, effective, and widely available in Kentucky.

Team Kentucky is committed to protecting the health and safety of all Kentuckians, including by promoting childhood vaccines, which help protect every child’s chance to grow up healthy.

No changes have been made to Kentucky’s vaccine requirements for children to attend school or daycare, and childhood vaccines continue to be covered by insurance in accordance with state and federal law. Medical and religious exemptions are still allowed.
Decades of research show that routine childhood vaccines are safe and effective when given according to the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendations. There is no new evidence to support changing the recommended immunization schedule for children.

The Kentucky Department for Public Health encourages families to talk with their pediatrician or other trusted health care provider about recommended vaccines and how best to protect their children and loved ones.
