The Jackson Police Department currently operates with a staff of 16 employees, including 10 full-time commissioned police officers. The patrol division has four sergeants and five patrol officers, with one officer working as investigators. One officer operate as a K-9 Unit. Our department also has five communications officers, and one secretary. Road officers work four 10 hour shifts a week in a s

taggered, "overlay" fashion, allowing for extra coverage during peak call times and days. Communications personnel, administrators and our secretary work the more traditional 8 hour shift. One patrol officer and one communications officer are assigned as fill-in personnel, covering both scheduled and emergency time off shifts for other employees. These positions greatly reduce the amount of forced overtime and allow for additional scheduling flexibility. When not covering vacations, holidays or sick leave, the fill-in employees are assigned as additional staffing during peak times. There is a 10 officer volunteer police auxiliary unit within the patrol division.

Information Release from Chief Hinsch of The Jackson Police

On September 2, 2026, at approximately 9:05 a.m., officers with the Jackson Police Department (JPD) responded to a residence of 109 W. South Street after receiving a 911 request for assistance from
Timothy McCormick, a resident of that property, but he would not be specific as to what kind of help he needed.

Upon arrival, a JPD officer approached the front entrance of the residence and announced the officers’ presence by knocking on the door. Officers then heard a single gunshot fired from inside the residence. Immediately following the gunshot, officers heard a male subject inside the home apologizing and stating that he had accidentally discharged a firearm.

Officers responded by getting into tactical positions with tactical weapons and established communications with McCormick. He was ordered out of his residence and taken into custody without further incident. McCormick is believed to have been suffering from mental conditions magnified with admission of use of illegal narcotics.

Investigators determined that multiple rounds had been fired from inside the residence prior to officers’ arrival. Several rounds penetrated the exterior of the residence, and the final destinations of those rounds remain unknown at this time.

Investigators subsequently obtained a search warrant for the residence, which was later executed by JPD officers. During the search, officers recovered several fi****ms, ammunition, and evidence of several discharged rounds of ammunition, believed to have been fired from inside the residence.

McCormick was later transported to the Jackson County Correctional Facility for incarceration. The investigation remains ongoing. Additional information may be released as it becomes available.

JPD is working closely with Jackson County Prosecutor Trent Douthett’s office for official charges. There is no current danger to the public as a result of this incident. This serious and dangerous incident was effectively brief thanks to the quick actions of JPD personnel, some off duty JPD personnel who responded to assist plus the additional support and quick response from a deputy from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, many Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and Jackson County EMS.

MEDIA RELEASE

On Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026 at 3:42 P.M., Officers of the Jackson Police Department responded to a reported bomb threat at the Jackson Walmart in Jackson, Ohio. Officers arrived on scene and took precautionary measures to ensure the safety of the public. The area was evacuated and secured.

Through investigation, it was reported to JPD that an unknown male subject had called the Walmart store in Jackson from an anonymous number and source and reported that they had placed multiple pipe bombs throughout the store. The caller claimed that the pipe bombs would detonate within 15 minutes of the call.

Assistance was requested and many local emergency response agencies arrived to assist while specialized resources were acquired.

The Columbus Fire Department Bomb Squad (Squad 2) responded to the scene with their CFD Medic 3. The State Fire Marshal’s Office also responded to the scene with their K-9 Unit.

CFD Bomb Squad, State Fire Marshal’s Office K-9 Unit, and Jackson Police, conducted search of Walmart property and as a result, no explosive devices or hazardous material were located. The threat to Walmart has been determined to be unfounded.

There is no ongoing threat to the public at this time. Normal operations have resumed at Walmart. The Jackson Fire Department, Jackson County EMS, Bloomfield Township Fire Department, Liberty Township Fire Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol all assisted on scene with this incident.

The Jackson Police Department takes all threats seriously and responds accordingly to ensure the safety of the community. Making false statements is a serious criminal offense, and this incident remains under investigation.

Vehicle owners parked along these routes are instructed to remove their vehicles parked along these roads. The Jackson Police Department will be getting these routes cleared today so that City of Jackson trucks can remove the snow and clear the roadways. JPD and the City of Jackson appreciate the cooperation.

Snow Emergency Routes; Ordinance 305.08 of the City of Jackson

(a) The City may declare a snow emergency in the City. In the event a snow emergency is declared, the following streets within the City are designated as snow emergency routes:
(1) All of State Route 139 in the City limits.
(2) All of State Route 776 in the City limits.
(3) All of State Route 788 in the City limits.
(4) All of State Route 93 in the City limits.
(5) East Broadway Street from Main Street to the intersection of Longworth Street.
(6) All of Huron Street.
(7) All of Portsmouth Street.
(8) All of High Street.
(9) All of South Street.
(10) All of State Street.
(b) In the event of a snow emergency no vehicle shall be parked on any snow emergency route as set forth above. Any vehicle parked upon a snow emergency route during a snow emergency will be towed at the expense of the owner of the vehicle.
(c) Whoever violates this section shall be punished by a fine of one hundred dollars ($100.00).
