Teton Interagency Fire managers have elevated the fire danger rating to “high” for Grand Teton National Park, the Bridger-Teton National Forest, and the National Elk Refuge.

While the landscape may still appear green, heavy dead and down timber and fuels are what drive fire activity. A high fire danger means wildfires can start easily and spread quickly. Fire managers consider things like fuel moisture (how dry grasses, shrubs, and trees are), forecasted temperatures and wind, how fast fires can grow, and whether firefighting resources are available nationwide.

What You Can Do
The safest option is to not build a fire at all. Dress warmly and use layers instead of relying on campfires for warmth.

If you choose to have a fire in areas where it's allowed:
• Never leave a campfire unattended.
• Have a shovel and water bucket on hand.
• Use several gallons of water to fully extinguish your campfire.
• Drown, stir, feel and repeat until the ashes are cold to the touch.
• Break up charred logs and cover all remains with dirt.

So far this year, 38 unattended campfires have been found in the Teton Interagency Fire area. If your fire sparks a wildfire, you can be held responsible for the cost of putting it out.

Fireworks Are Always Prohibited
As we approach the Independence Day holiday, a reminder: fireworks are strictly prohibited in Grand Teton National Park, the Bridger-Teton National Forest, and the National Elk Refuge. These regulations are essential to preventing wildfires during a time of heightened risk.

Good news from WYDOT Teton County!

Teton County offices will be closed on Friday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth.

The Teton County Trash Transfer Station and Recycling Center will be closed Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.

The Trash Transfer Station staff will reopen for their usual weekend hours on Saturday, June 20, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Great reminders for bear encounters from Grand Teton National Park:

🐻 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝘄 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗿?

Encounters can happen anywhere in Grand Teton. Staying calm and knowing how to respond matters.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗿 🐻:
🏃‍♂️ 𝗗𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝗻. Bears can outrun humans.
↪️ If the bear has not noticed you, quietly detour away.
🔙 If it has seen you, 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗹𝘆 while speaking in a calm voice.
👁️ Avoid direct eye contact and keep your pack on.
💨 Be ready with your bear spray.

Bears sometimes stand on their hind legs to get a better look. That is not a sign of aggression but rather a bear curious about something nearby.

Bear attacks are rare. Most incidents happen when a bear is surprised. Signs of escalating agitation can include huffing, jaw popping, or head swaying. A lowered head with the ears back can signal aggression.

𝗜𝗳 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀 ⚠️:
🛑 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱. Some charges are bluffs.
💨 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗮𝘆. Aim just in front of the bear so it runs into the spray cloud.
💥 𝗜𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁, drop to the ground, lie flat on your stomach, cover the back of your neck with your hands, and 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗱. Stay still until the bear leaves.

Make noise, stay aware, and give wildlife plenty of space.
