So, about that personhood initiative:

There will be no pro-life “personhood” initiative on the Mississippi ballot this November, state officials confirmed Wednesday, as a senior figure in the anti-abortion camp said activists had long ago abandoned the drive to revive the measure.

Mississippians said no in 2011, and we still believe that the government has no place in private decisions.

Abortion opponents face a Wednesday deadline to submit petitions to put the proposed state constitutional amendment on the November 2015 ballot. It would be nearly identical to a ballot initiative that 58 percent of Mississippi voters rejected in November 2011.

Remember when the Yes on 26 folks said personhood wouldn't ban access to IVF or contraceptives? In this piece the Oklahoma person running their efforts "acknowledged.... that Personhood wants to ban the IUD and emergency contraception, because they 'potentially can fall into that category when they disrupt the implantation of an embryo.'" And "The revised language also says that the amendment would “affect, but not prohibit” in vitro fertilization, with restrictions that infertility advocates say amount to the same thing."

It failed to restrict women's rights in Mississippi and Colorado, but Personhood USA won't quit. Next up: Oklahoma

A small group of people held a press conference last week to announce they are unhappy that Mississippi legislators did not pass personhood, and that their group will push a new voter-driven effort by gathering petitions to get this back on the ballot. What are your thoughts?

Looks like all of the personhood bills in MS have died - for now. But keep a watchful eye and be diligent. Some of these legislators are pretty slick, and you never know what they might try to slip through the cracks.

We're feeling like a broken record about this: Remember when Mississippians resoundingly voted to protect our families and reject personhood in November? We do too! It was amazing! Unfortunately some MS legislators either forgot or weren't paying attention because they filed a personhood bill in the Mississippi House. Now that bill has been introduced, HC 61.
