Given that all substances for the survival of algae are dissolved in water, macroalgae, compared to plants, do not need roots, stems or leaves. Nutrients and gases are exchanged directly across the surface of the algae by diffusion and active transport. Some species do not have functional differentiation, and each cell takes its supply of nutrients from the surrounding water. On the other hand, in a number of brown macroalgae, specialized cells and tissues can be found that contribute to the distribution of nutrition in the body.
