If you have an outstanding warrant in Cape Girardeau County, we encourage you to turn yourself in at the Sheriff's Office. Choosing to address the matter voluntarily is often the first step toward resolving the issue.

For those who choose not to, our deputies and task force officers will continue working to ensure outstanding warrants are served, and individuals are brought before the court to answer for their charges.

How many of us were caught a bit off guard during yesterday's weather event and flash flooding?

The rain moved in quickly, and in some areas, water covered roads within minutes. While conditions have improved, yesterday serves as a good reminder of how rapidly flash flooding can develop.

Flooded roadways are often deeper and more dangerous than they appear. Just a small amount of moving water can make a vehicle difficult to control, and hidden hazards beneath the surface can turn a routine drive into an emergency.

The next time heavy rain moves through Cape County, remember:

• Never drive around barricades or road closure signs.
• Slow down during heavy rainfall and allow extra travel time.
• If you encounter water covering a roadway, turn around and find an alternate route.
• Stay informed of changing weather and road conditions.

Yesterday's flooding may be behind us, but the lesson remains the same:

Turn Around, Don't Drown.

Cape Girardeau County Deputies Arrest Suspect Following Foot Pursuit; Stolen Firearm Recovered

On June 7, 2026, at approximately 12:33 a.m., a Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Office deputy observed suspicious activity involving a vehicle in the area of William Street and Henderson Street within Cape Girardeau County.

During the investigation, a passenger later identified as 19-year-old Cartez Brae-Shon Wallace fled on foot after making contact with law enforcement. Deputies pursued Wallace through the neighborhood and ultimately took him into custody without incident.

Following Wallace's arrest, deputies conducted a search of the area. During the search, K9 Zeno was deployed to conduct an article search along the suspect's path of travel and alerted deputies to the location of the discarded firearm. The alert led deputies to the recovery of a G***k Model 30 Gen 4 .45 caliber handgun equipped with an extended magazine.

Further investigation revealed the firearm had been reported stolen from Cape Girardeau in 2021. Deputies also determined the firearm was equipped with a conversion device commonly referred to as a "switch." The handgun was loaded with one round in the chamber and 16 additional rounds in the magazine.

The Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney's Office formally charged Wallace with:

• Receiving Stolen Property (Class D Felony)
• Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Class D Felony)
• Resisting Arrest by Fleeing (Class E Felony)

The Honorable Julia M. Koester issued a warrant for Wallace's arrest with a $20,000 cash-only bond.

A charge is merely an accusation. All persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

We are just going to get out in front of this now.

National Doughnut Day is this Friday.

While we appreciate the kindness, our office does not need 17 dozen boxes of doughnuts showing up on Friday morning.

We respectfully ask for your cooperation in boycotting National Doughnut Day. 🤣
