Attendees gained insight into MDOC’s workforce development programs, employment readiness initiatives, industry-recognized certification opportunities, and strategies for employers and community partners to engage in meaningful partnerships that support justice-involved individuals as they transition back into the workforce.

The Lunch & Learn served as a platform for networking, resource sharing, and collaborative discussions focused on addressing workforce demands while creating pathways to sustainable employment and long-term success.

🥊 Gloves Up, Spirits High at CMCF 🥊

Central Mississippi Correctional Facility Programs Warden George King believes the future of the prison's boxing program is bright.

The Top Dog Boxing Team recently hosted an exhibition event that brought energy, discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship to the Rankin County prison. Sponsored by Superintendent Matt Reynolds, the Executive Staff, and a community partnership with the local Rankin County boxing gym, the event showcased the positive impact structured programs can have in our facilities.

Under the leadership of Superintendent Reynolds, Deputy Superintendent Denise Bone, and King, four exhibition matches took place, each consisting of three rounds at three minutes each. The atmosphere was electric as participants demonstrated heart, conditioning, focus, and determination inside the ring.

Special thanks to Coach “BomBay” for serving as referee and helping maintain a professional and competitive environment throughout the event.

The Top Dog Boxing Program continues to prove that discipline, accountability, structure, and positive competition can create opportunities for growth and change. Events like this help build morale, encourage healthy outlets, and reinforce the values of teamwork and perseverance.

A huge thank you to all staff, sponsors, coaches, and fighters who made the May event possible.

MDOC Launches Specialized Unit for Inmates with Mental Health and Substance Use Challenges

JACKSON, MS (June 5) – A new unit is operating at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility as a treatment environment for inmates diagnosed with mental illness, substance use disorders, or a combination of both.

The specialized Behavioral Management Unit (BMU) is guided by Qualified Behavioral Health Professionals and is designed to support individuals who are particularly vulnerable in the general population. Admission into the BMU begins with a recommendation from professional mental health staff and concludes with approval from the BMU commander and the facility superintendent.

“Since its implementation, the BMU has contributed to measurable improvements in both health outcomes and facility stability, CMCF Mental Health Director Jasmine Nelson said. “We have observed a notable decrease in medical emergencies related to substance use, including incidents associated with withdrawal, intoxication, and relapse-driven behavior. “Individuals experiencing acute mental illness are now able to receive more intensive, coordinated care, including closer psychiatric monitoring, medication management, and structured therapeutic intervention,” Nelson added.

Approximately 40 individuals have participated in the program to date, with the majority remaining actively engaged in ongoing treatment and rehabilitative services. The unit is designed for up to 78 individuals.

Rather than relying solely on punitive measures, the BMU offers a therapeutic alternative centered on clinical stabilization, treatment, and recovery. The unit delivers immediate intervention for individuals in crisis through evidence-based practices, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and trauma-informed care.

Participants engage in multiple weekly sessions tailored to their clinical needs, including psychotherapy, relapse prevention, and life skills development, along with individualized psychiatric care. Classes are developed based on the needs of the population and are taught by professional mental health personnel, ensuring that treatment remains responsive and individualized.

The long-term goal of the program is to stabilize participants’ mental health and place them on a sustainable path toward recovery upon completion. Another, but unrelated, program at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution has a similar goal.

The Houses of Healing program is an intensive 13-session rehabilitative program focused on emotional growth and trauma recovery. Over the past three years, approximately 100 individuals have completed the program. “Houses of Healing is built on the understanding that many criminal and addictive behaviors stem from unresolved trauma, grief, and chronic anger,” said SMCI Programs Director Lisa Herndon.

Through peer-led group sessions and a structured curriculum, participants develop skills in emotional regulation, accountability, and conflict resolution. “The program has shown positive outcomes, including fewer disciplinary infractions, improved anger management, and stronger interpersonal relationships,” Herndon said. Participants also report increased hopefulness and a greater sense of personal responsibility.

MCIW Hosts Reentry Job Fair for Women Leaving Prison

The Mississippi Correctional Institute for Women (MCIW) hosted a Reentry Job Fair on Friday, bringing together employers, workforce development organizations, educational providers, and community partners to help prepare incarcerated women for successful reentry into society.

The event provided participants with information on employment opportunities, vocational training programs, substance abuse recovery services, transitional housing assistance, career development resources, and other support services available upon release.

Representatives from multiple organizations met with inmates to discuss workforce readiness, job placement assistance, educational opportunities, and reentry services to help individuals be productive, self-sufficient members of their communities.

Participating organizations included Second Chance Mississippi, Build Mississippi, VitalCore Health Strategies, Grace House, Hinds Community College, MAGCOR Industries, and Working Solutions.

The job fair is part of the Mississippi Department of Corrections’ ongoing commitment to reduce recidivism through education, workforce development, and community partnerships. Research consistently shows that stable employment and access to support services are key factors in helping formerly incarcerated individuals successfully transition back into their communities.

MDOC continues to expand reentry initiatives across the state by partnering with employers and community organizations.
