Creating public policy can be complex. The process of a bill going through the legislature is a good example: there are sometimes a dozen or more different votes on a bill and its amendments; each can change the meaning or intent of the proposed legislation. Thus, the analogy of “sausage making” whereby a lot of different ingredients get thrown together, sometimes resulting in excellent outcomes and other times in less-than-ideal results.

Complex, too, are the issues that come before our local county commission and town council–especially when it comes to multifaceted proposals for development in our community.

That’s why I hope you’ll remember to vote in the August 20 primary–because now, more than ever, we need thoughtful, knowledgeable leaders on the commission and the council who can look past the promises that developers so often put forward and see what is really being proposed.

I believe the best candidates for local office are and —seasoned community members who will be able to look under the hood of these proposals and know if the internal workings of a plan are in place.

As I’ve had the privilege to get to know so many of you over the last two years, I know you share my concerns with unrestrained growth here in Teton County. Please do make sure you vote—either tomorrow at the Teton County Administration Building at 200 S Willow Street, or at any of the Vote Centers on TOMORROW, August 20. Our community’s future is counting on it.

I’m excited to tell you that as a result of running unopposed in my re-election bid for House District 23, I will run a very modest campaign and instead focus my efforts on helping great candidates locally and around the state get elected. I hope you’ll join me in supporting them!

First up is Ivan Posey, running in House District 33 that represents members from both the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes. If elected, he’ll be the only Native American member of the legislature, a voice that is sorely needed.

Ivan is an amazing person and will provide the kind of leadership we need. He’s running against a member of the far-right extremist faction of the legislature who is against reproductive rights for women and vaccines. Please learn more about Ivan (here ➡️ https://www.poseyforhd33.com/ ) and join me in supporting his candidacy by making a donation to his campaign!

I chaired the Treatment of Predators Working Group meeting on Tuesday in Lander. We were able to find consensus in proposing to make it illegal to prolong the suffering of an injured animal but failed to address running over wildlife with vehicles, even for non-agricultural “recreational” activities. Which seems really unfortunate. Ethics have been tossed aside related to predators in Wyoming for too long.

It was an honor to take part in the legislative panel at the Reproductive Freedom Summit in Lander, and great to hear keynote speaker Jessica Valenti remind us that Americans overwhelmingly support reproductive rights - as do the majority of Wyomingites. On this day, the two year anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, we need to remind ourselves that this is a political problem we can solve if we roll up our sleeves, get organized and get to work.
