6/14/26 3:30pm Update: "We continue to monitor the potential for multiple rounds of showers and storms to develop and push across the local area over the coming days. These storms may produce heavy rainfall, which could lead to flooding concerns. Most likely 3-day rainfall totals look to be around 2-4 inches, although isolated spots may see up to 5-8 inches, particularly over areas where training storms may set up." ⚠️ We are fast approaching a time when emails, text messages, phone calls, and online messages can no longer be trusted. Artificial intelligence is being paired with the mindset of thieves and scammers, making fraud attempts more convincing than ever before.

Please be cautious and skeptical anytime you are contacted by someone you do not know, or when you receive an unexpected call, text, email, or message claiming to be from a government agency, financial institution, business, or law enforcement organization.

Some common scams to watch for include:

• Government Impersonation Scam: Someone claims to be from the Post Office, IRS, Social Security, Medicare, or law enforcement and demands money or personal information.

• Bank Fraud Scam: A caller or text claims there is suspicious activity on your account and asks for passwords, PINs, or verification codes.

• Package Delivery Scam: A text claims there is a problem with a package delivery and directs you to a fake website.

• Unpaid Toll Scam: A text message claims you owe a small toll balance and asks for immediate payment.

• Tech Support Scam: Someone claims your computer or phone has a virus and asks for remote access or payment.

• Romance Scam: A person builds an online relationship and eventually asks for money.

• Investment or Cryptocurrency Scam: Promises of guaranteed returns or secret investment opportunities that require you to send money.

• Grandparent or Family Emergency Scam: A caller claims a loved one is in trouble and needs money immediately.

Remember: Never click links, provide passwords, send gift cards, transfer cryptocurrency, or provide banking information unless you have independently verified who you are dealing with.

When in doubt, hang up, delete the message, and contact the organization directly using a phone number you know is legitimate.

⚠️ Marketplace or Small Business Scam: Scammers may contact individuals selling products or requesting products through Facebook Messenger, Marketplace, or small businesses.

Recently, a local cake seller was contacted through Facebook Messenger by someone claiming to be interested in purchasing a cake. The conversation later shifted to requests for personal information, including a phone number and their home address.

The message appeared to originate from what looked like a U.S. Postal Service number. Be cautious anytime a potential customer begins asking for unnecessary personal information or attempts to move the conversation away from normal business transactions.

Legitimate customers generally only need enough information to place and receive an order.

Proposed Vacation of a Portion of County Road 238: Your Coffee County Commission has received a petition requesting the vacation of its prescriptive right-of-way for a portion of County Road 238.

Alabama law establishes a specific procedure that must be followed before the Commission can consider such a request. The process is governed by Code of Alabama § 23-4-2, which requires public notice, a public hearing, and an opportunity for interested parties to be heard before any action may be taken.

Timeline for the Proposed Vacation of a Portion of County Road 238

As noted above, Alabama law establishes a specific procedure that must be followed before the Coffee County Commission can consider a petition to vacate a public road. The following timeline outlines the required steps for the proposed vacation of a portion of County Road 238:

• June 8, 2026: Because the road is located in District 1, the District 1 Commissioner must make the motion to accept the petition into the Commission's records and begin the statutory notification process. This motion does not vacate the road. It simply accepts the landowner's petition and sets in motion public notification and a public hearing.

• June 8, 2026: Notice of the public hearing will also be posted at the courthouses and Commission offices.

• June 8, 2026: Certified notices will be mailed to all abutting property owners and public utilities.

• June 11, June 18, June 25, and July 2, 2026: Notice of the public hearing will be published in the Elba Clipper for four consecutive weeks as required by law.

• July 13, 2026: At 9:00 a.m. a public hearing will be held during the regular Coffee County Commission meeting. Citizens will have an opportunity to speak for or against the proposed vacation.

• July 13, 2026: Following the public hearing, the Commission may take action on the petition.

• July 13, 2026: If the landowner's petition is approved, the resolution vacating the portion of County Road 238 will be filed in the Probate Office.

• July 16, 2026: Notice of the Commission's action will be published in the Elba Clipper.

The purpose of this process is to ensure that all affected landowners, utility providers, and members of the public have notice and an opportunity to be heard before any decision is made. There are maps posted in the comments of this post.

Types of Right-of-Ways:

A prescriptive right-of-way is a public road that exists through long public use rather than a recorded deed. In most cases, the adjacent landowners still own the property to the centerline of the road, subject to the public's right to travel. The road itself is under the custody and control of the county, meaning adjoining landowners cannot close, alter, repair, or obstruct it. Utilities are often located within or beneath the traveled roadway itself rather than in a separately deeded right-of-way.

A deeded right-of-way is a strip of land that has been formally conveyed to the county through a deed, easement, condemnation, or other recorded legal instrument. The county's rights and the width of the right-of-way are typically defined in the recorded documents. Unlike a prescriptive right-of-way, the county has a documented property interest in the land rather than merely the right to maintain and control a road. Utilities, drainage structures, slopes, ditches, and other roadway features are often located within the deeded right-of-way outside the traveled portion of the road.

An Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) employee was injured this week in Hale County when a tractor-trailer struck a mowing tractor along State Route 69.

Thankfully, ALDOT reports the employee is expected to recover.

This incident comes just days after another tragic event in Bullock County, where a longtime ALDOT employee with 24 years of service was struck and killed while working in an active work zone.

These men and women work every day to maintain our roads, often just a few feet from passing traffic. Whether you encounter highway workers, county road crews, utility workers, or mowing operations, please slow down, stay alert, put distractions away, and give them plenty of room to work safely.

A few seconds of patience could save a life.

Right-of-Way Mowing Update: The Coffee County Highway Department's full-width right-of-way mowing program is continuing across the county.

To date, crews have completed approximately 49.6% of the work, mowing just over 263 miles of our approximately 530 miles of paved county roads.

We appreciate the hard work of our mowing crews and ask the public to please remain alert and use caution when approaching mowing operations. Slow down, watch for workers and equipment, and give crews plenty of room to work safely.

A few extra seconds of patience can help ensure that everyone makes it home safely at the end of the day.

Sunday, 31-May-2026 0700. Update from NWS Tallahassee.

Good morning,

Bottom Line:
Heavy rainfall and pockets of flash flooding are possible today, particularly over our counties in Southwest Georgia, Southeast Alabama and Florida counties along the State Line. These areas are under a Slight Risk of Excessive Rainfall (Level 2 of 4) today. Nearly all of our remaining Florida counties are under a Marginal Risk of Excessive Rainfall (Level 1 of 4).

Overview:

Heavy rain is forecast today. Today will be the most convectively active day of the forecast period with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms expected. Widespread rainfall amounts range from about a half inch to 1.5 inches (isolated higher). However, local high-resolution models suggest a 12-hr worst case scenario of 3-4+ inches this afternoon and about 2-5+ inches during the evening mainly north of the FL state line (isolated 6-8 inches appears possible). The probability of 3 inches ranges from about 25-50% - highest around the I-75 corridor and Wiregrass Region. The High-Resolution Ensemble Forecast (HREF) paints high probabilities for greater than 3 inches in SE AL, SW GA, and parts of the Eastern FL Big Bend with lower end probabilities of exceeding 5 inches. This information suggests a fairly high ceiling for heavy rain. Current flash flood guidance shows that about 2-2.5 inches in 1 hr and/or 3-4 inches in 3 hrs would be needed to produce flash flooding.
