UPDATE:

The health department recently closed the beach at Hubscher Park due to an algae bloom. The health department has retested the water, and it is again safe for swimming. Algal blooms first started occurring in our parks three years ago. In response, we have hired contractors to chemically treat Hubscher and Reed Parks to mitigate algae and excess vegetation. This is done on an as-needed basis to keep the lakes safe for swimming and to avoid negatively impacting the fish population. We cannot prevent all algal blooms, but know that we are doing all we can to maintain safe and enjoyable facilities.
It is also worth remembering that swimming at both parks is at your own risk. Though not all algae are harmful, it is good to avoid them in whatever body of water you choose to recreate in. Algal blooms have become increasingly common across the state, and we will likely have to continue dealing with them in our parks.
