How we work:
1. Interview & Intake: Our first service is to personally meet with your senior and everyone in the family who wishes to come along. During our thorough interview and intake process, we uncover every factor that plays into the care required. Things we check for include the level of medical care required, how much social activity is desired, acceptable locations, and of course financial considerations.
2. Research & Recommendations: From everything we learn about your senior’s wants and needs, we get to work, finding the best relevant options in the desired area.
4. Our only goal is complete satisfaction, since this is a major transition in life. If there are issues, we’ll work to fix them, and if your senior isn’t happy, we’ll find them an even better option.
5. Sourcing Professionals for All Other Needs: We aren’t a placement agency—we’re care concierges. If your senior needs help figuring out Medicare benefits, we have people for that. If they need to make arrangements for their pets, there’s someone ready to help. If they need movers who take it easy on the heirlooms, we know who to call. We have lawyers on speed dial. And we have experts to help with the Veterans Affairs, too.

Dolly's Dilemma ~ The less celebrated part of Dolly’s story that hits hard

Bottom line: There is another part of Dolly’s story that really landed with me. Less than a year ago, she posted a two-minute video called “I Ain’t Dead Yet!”

Part of what made Dolly Parton so beloved, beyond her generational talent and extraordinary generosity, was the way she held together qualities that in almost anyone else might have felt contradictory.

She was extravagant and down-to-earth, enormously successful and genuinely humble, traditional and quietly rebellious, funny without being cruel, sentimental without being false. She understood exactly what people saw when they looked at her, and she was always a little in on the joke, but never cynical about any of it.

Sophistication and simplicity, ambition and kindness, strength and tenderness. She somehow made room for all of it.

But there is another, much less celebrated part of Dolly’s story that really landed with me.

Less than a year ago, she posted a two-minute video called “I Ain’t Dead Yet!” In the middle of telling everyone she was doing just fine, she acknowledged that she was also dealing with some health issues.

And then she explained why.

Her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl, had been seriously ill for several years, reportedly with Alzheimer’s, and Dolly had devoted herself to caring for him. In the process, she said:

“I didn’t take care of myself. So I let a lot of things go that I should have been taking care of.”

I’ve seen that dynamic up close. When my stepmother Fran was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, my dad made caring for her his mission. I saw firsthand the toll that kind of all-encompassing, selfless devotion can take on the caregiver.

Other celebrity tragedies, like Gene Hackman and Tim Conway, have driven home in powerful ways the limits of love and wealth alone in protecting us from our worst fears about aging.

But Dolly’s story hits differently. A landmark JAMA study, Caregiving as a Risk Factor For Mortality, found that older spousal caregivers had a 63% higher mortality risk over four years than comparable non-caregivers. Dolly becomes the human face of that statistic.

And this is where traditional legal planning falls short. Read your Power of Attorney carefully and, in the end, you’ll find it just says to your loved ones:

You figure it out.

Deal with the healthcare system and the insurance company. Pay the bills. Manage the investments. Handle the taxes. Figure out whether Dad can stay home. Find care. Manage siblings. Make impossible decisions.

Power is not a plan.

Without a roadmap, love and good intentions too often turn into exhaustion, guilt, conflict, regret and sometimes something worse.

Even in close and well-resourced families, we often see the same patterns:

Seniors who desperately don't want to burden their loved ones.

Siblings who all want to do the right thing, but have very different ideas about what “the right thing” is.

One child quietly handling the finances while everyone else wonders what is happening.

A daughter carrying most of the caregiving load, often without enough help, recognition, or support.

Conflict arising between children and parents because children focus solely on downside risks such as falls, illness, frailty, and financial loss. In doing so, they lose sight of upside risk: the possibility that, by preventing every danger, they may also limit the purpose, joy, and connection that make life meaningful.
We all say some version of the same thing:

I never want to be a burden.

But that is an empty aspiration without a roadmap.

Now we have a roadmap.

Build a longevity roadmap to live well across a longer life without burdening the people we love or losing our life savings.

Build a longevity roadmap to simplify the complexity of living well across longer lives.

Because loving the important people in your life shouldn’t mean overwhelming their lives.

And loving someone shouldn’t require losing yourself.

Rest in power, Dolly.

Final Thought: Build a longevity roadmap because loving the important people in your life shouldn’t mean overwhelming their lives. And loving someone shouldn’t require losing yourself.

Rest in power, Dolly.

Not every senior housing community in Washington state is in good standing. 📋

State inspections are public record, and some facilities carry citations that families would never know to look for on their own.

Vetting a community before a loved one moves in is not optional. It is essential. 🏡

Start the senior housing conversation before a crisis forces it. 🏡

Sit down with your family this week and ask two simple questions: What kind of care would feel right for Mom or Dad? And what can we afford?

You don't need all the answers today. You just need to start. A little planning now saves enormous stress later. 💙

Hospitals can discharge a patient with just 72 hours' notice. 🏥

That leaves very little time to evaluate safety, research housing options, and coordinate a move.

Understanding how discharge planning works before a situation arises is one of the most valuable steps a family can take. 💡

Hello, I’m Candie Jolgen, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to work alongside one of my best friends, Julie Hvitfeldtsen, the founder and owner of Bestemor Senior Solutions. It’s an ideal arrangement for me because I’m able to work from home while also being there for my 98-year-old mother, Gloria. Because she depends on me, I’m not able to be away from home for extended periods of time.

My mother and I live in Providence Point, a wonderful Independent 55+ community in Issaquah, WA. There are so many opportunities to get involved, from the many clubs and activities to the Communiversity classes. I feel incredibly fortunate to call Providence Point home and to have made so many wonderful friends here.
Recently, I experienced firsthand just how special this community is when I fell and broke my wrist. My friends were there for me every step of the way, offering help, encouragement, and support throughout my recovery. Their kindness reminded me once again what makes Providence Point such a special place to live.
At the same time, many of our residents eventually reach a point where they need to consider transitioning to a different type of housing or care. Some may no longer be able to safely live independently, while others may have spouses who can no longer provide the level of care and support their loved ones need.
Through our community outreach and referral program, I’ve had the privilege of connecting residents and their families with Julie when they find themselves facing these difficult transitions. Whether they are exploring assisted living, memory care, or hospice; navigating elder law; or preparing for a move and downsizing, Julie brings extensive experience and compassion to the process.
Bestemor Senior Solutions offers complementary services designed to help seniors and their families understand their options, navigate the many decisions involved, and ultimately find the solution that best fits their individual needs and circumstances.
For me, being able to support my neighbors while working alongside a trusted friend is truly a privilege. I’m grateful to be part of a community where people look out for one another—and where I can help connect families with the resources and guidance they need when life takes them in a new direction.
❤️ Yours truly, Candie & Mom, Gloria 98th Bday picture
