We have entered the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season, the Isle of Palms Police Department encourages residents and visitors to prepare now, not when a storm is already approaching. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Early preparation is one of the most important steps you can take to protect yourself, your family, and your property.
PREPARE NOW
Don’t wait until a hurricane is in the forecast. Take time today to:
• Review your family emergency plan
• Know your evacuation zone and evacuation routes
• Sign up for emergency alerts and notifications
• Check your insurance coverage and important documents
• Document your home and valuables with photos or video
• Identify a safe place to go if an evacuation is ordered
• Make plans for pets and family members with special needs
BUILD OR RESTOCK YOUR HURRICANE KIT
Every household should have enough supplies to be self-sufficient for several days after a storm. Your emergency kit should include:
• Water (at least 1 gallon per person, per day, for a minimum of 3 days)
• Non-perishable food
• Prescription medications and medical supplies
• First aid kit
• Flashlights and extra batteries
• Cell phone chargers and backup power banks
• Battery-powered or hand-crank weather radio
• Cash and important documents in a waterproof container
• Personal hygiene items
• Pet food and pet supplies
• Infant supplies, if needed
STAY INFORMED
Follow trusted sources for weather updates and emergency information, including:
• NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center
• US National Weather Service Charleston SC
• South Carolina Emergency Management Division
• Charleston County Emergency Management
• City of Isle of Palms
The best time to prepare is before a storm develops. A few hours spent preparing today can make a significant difference when severe weather threatens our area. The Isle of Palms Police Department will be here before, during, and after a storm, but your preparedness is the first step in keeping your family safe.
Stay informed. Stay prepared. Stay safe.
