🌊 Know the flags. Know the risks. Stay safe.

Before entering the water, take a moment to check the beach warning flags and understand what they mean. Conditions can change quickly, and the flag system is there to help keep you and your family safe.

🟒 Green – Low Hazard
🟑 Yellow – Medium Hazard
πŸ”΄ Red – High Hazard
🚫 Double Red – Water Closed

No flag can replace good judgment. When in doubt, stay out.

β˜€οΈ BEACH & HEAT SAFETY REMINDER β˜€οΈ

As temperatures rise and beach season kicks off, remember to stay safe in the sun and look out for one another. Heat stroke can happen quickly β€” especially during long days on the beach.

πŸ’§ Drink plenty of water
⛱️ Take breaks in the shade
🧴 Wear sunscreen and light clothing
🌑️ Know the signs of heat illness
πŸ‘€ Check on children, older adults, and pets

If someone becomes confused, dizzy, stops sweating, or develops a high body temperature, call 911 immediately and begin cooling efforts.

Enjoy the sunshine responsibly and help keep our beaches safe for everyone! πŸŒŠβ˜€οΈ

Crews recently held a training exercise focused on a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) evolution built around a down firefighter scenario.

Crews worked through a coordinated rescue involving search operations, locating a downed firefighter, performing a face mask swap, initiating buddy breathing, and transitioning to air supply from a cylinder in the RIT bag. The scenario emphasized controlled, methodical action under pressure.

Once stabilized, crews completed extrication of the patient, reinforcing the importance of teamwork, discipline, and maintaining composure during low-visibility, high-stress rescue situations.

Training like this sharpens the skills that matter when seconds count and conditions are at their worst.

Outstanding work by two of our highly respected professionals, Battalion Chief James Giddens and Captain Chris Fassos.

Battalion Chief Giddens recently participated in a media interview to discuss a technically complex water rescue at 3rd Avenue involving multiple swimmers in distress. During the interview, he also emphasized the importance of rip current and ocean safety in support of the National Weather Service’s 2nd Annual Carolinas Rip Current Awareness Week, aligning with our ongoing commitment to community risk reduction as a Fire Safe South Carolina Community.

Captain Fassos also represented the department in an interview with News Channel 2, providing operational insight on the one-year anniversary of a dynamic rescue conducted in coordination with our automatic aid partners: Sullivan’s Island Fire Rescue, Mount Pleasant Fire Department, and Charleston County EMS.

We are proud to see our personnel continue to develop as leaders and dedicated professionals through ongoing training and operational readiness, furthering our mission of creating a safer Isle of Palms.
