The Isla Vista Recreation & Park District was established in 1972, celebrating its 50th Anniversary!
The IV Parks board is the only elected government body that exclusively serves Isla Vista, which is an unincorporated part of SB County. Thus, this page will serve as a hub for Isla Vista updates both within and outside the scope of the Parks district.

The Isla Vista Recreation & Park District (IVRPD) is a Special District that was established in 1972 as part of a new vision for Isla Vista in response to the student disturbances and riots of 1969 and 1970. For 45yrs IVRPD served as the only locally elected governmental agency formed to specifically serve the community of Isla Vista. As a Special District it is governed by, and funded by the residents of the community and is not beholden to any other entity. It has a 5 member Board of Directors, and by law, all candidates and voters alike are required to be residents of Isla Vista.
Unique to Isla Vista, but proportionate to the demographic, the IVRPD Board of Directors typically includes at least 3 students. Because of the transitory nature of the largely student community, the Board experiences an exceptionally high rate of turnover, as most students graduate or move out of Isla Vista before completing 2yrs of their 4yr terms.
IVRPD has an operating budget of approx. $1.8 million derived from a combination of special taxes and property tax. In May 2017 voters approved Measure O which will provide an additional $250k per year for 10 yrs. to pay for capital projects, recreation and cultural programming and deferred maintenance.
The District maintains a total of 25 parks, beach access points, and open spaces, some of which are owned by the County of Santa Barbara. Most parks are designed for passive enjoyment while others have basketball courts, a soccer field, disk golf, BMX pump track, volleyball, and a climbing boulder. IVRPD’s Children’s Recreation Program operates an afterschool program which serves primarily at risk children ages of 5 -12. It also hosts quarterly food distributions and offers approx. 400 field trips and excursions annually in the evenings and on Saturdays.
In addition to parks, IVRPD also operates a 34 plot Community Garden, the Adopt-A-Block volunteer street trash removal program, the Isla Vista Mural Project and facilitates the Graffiti Abatement Program.
IVRPD has 10 full time staff, and employs approximately 12 part time employees who are primarily hired through the Federal-Work Study Program. IVRPD emphasizes community engagement and accomplishes much of what it does through applying for grants and forming partnerships with student groups and other community stakeholders.
