On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, U.S. military forces reached Galveston, Texas, with the message that the war was over, and the enslaved people were free.

We are grateful for our partnership with DMN in fighting hunger in our neighborhoods. Hunger does not take a summer break or a holiday.

Dallas-Fort Worth ranked third for food insecurity among the country’s metro areas, according to the most recent data from Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap initiative. The report also revealed one in five children in Texas face hunger, placing the state 5th for most food insecure children in the country.

During the summer months, childhood food insecurity becomes all the more difficult to navigate.

These are the moments that remind me why I do this.

On a Saturday morning, State Representative Terry Meza, Councilman Dennis Webb, and Dallas County Treasurer Pauline Medrano gathered alongside Irving Cares, Catholic Charities, and North Texas Food Bank. Not because they had to, but because they care.

Food insecurity doesn’t always look the way we imagine. It’s the senior stretching $25 a month. The working parent with two jobs yet one car repair away from crisis. The student quietly struggling to stay enrolled. It’s not somewhere else. It’s here in Irving.

What gives me hope is seeing leaders show up, collaborate to find synergies, and refuse to look away. That’s how change starts.

Grateful to be in that room. Grateful for every person fighting this fight.
