Today, we remember the fallen. We honor those who have given their lives in service of our country.

This Memorial Day, take some time to reflect on the sacrifice a fallen soldier has made for you and the American people - and think how you can carry that spirit of loyalty and bravery into your own life.

Scouting America’s International Commissioner, Lou Paulson, would like to announce that Praveen Karunaratne (Troop 457, Greater Niagara Frontier Council) and Charles Welch (Troop 76, Connecticut Yankee Council) were chosen to receive the 2025 Messengers of Peace Distinguished Project Award. 💜🕊️

Charles was selected for the award for his work restoring diverse ecosystems in Stratford, Connecticut. The project exemplifies the spirit of the Messengers of Peace initiative, as Charles worked to stabilize one of the few remaining intact coastal dune systems in Connecticut. Across the 9.5 acres, Charles, Scouts from Troop 76, and over 50 other volunteers set up drift fences to help mitigate dune wind erosion and erected bird boxes throughout the property to help restore nesting habitat for native tree swallows. His efforts to rebuild this special ecological habitat exemplifies the Messengers of Peace concept of sustainable change.

Scouting America’s International Commissioner, Lou Paulson, would like to announce that Praveen Karunaratne (Troop 457, Great Falls Council) and Charles Welch (Troop 76, Connecticut Yankee Council) were chosen to receive the 2025 Messengers of Peace Distinguished Project Award. 💜🕊️

Praveen was selected for his work connecting two continents in an effort to reduce inequalities through action. Through his organization and leadership, Scouts in Troop 457 in Williamsville, NY assembled care packages to be brought to orphans in Sri Lanka. Praveen then traveled to Sri Lanka with the care packages, where he organized efforts with three Sri Lankan Boy Scout Troops and one Girl Guide unit to make repairs and paint the Sri Lankan orphanage. The project exemplifies the spirit of the Messengers of Peace initiative, bringing together over 75 volunteers in New York and Sri Lanka to achieve remarkable outcomes.
