George Washington's commission from Congress on June 19, 1775 made clear the American principle that his duty was to REPEL INVADERS:

"for the defence of American Liberty and for repelling every hostile invasion thereof"

and follow orders from Congress:

"And you are to ... punctually to observe and follow such orders and directions from time to time as you shall receive from this or a future Congress of the said United Colonies or a committee of Congress for that purpose appointed"
