BESSEMER - Donald Charles Morrison, 54 from Ironwood, MI was sentenced today in Gogebic County for the crimes of conspiracy with intent to deliver methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine within 1000 ft. of a public park according to Nicholas Jacobs, Gogebic County Prosecuting Attorney.
On October 1, 2024 Morrison’s vehicle was stopped and detained by the Gogebic-Iron Narcotics Team (G.I.A.N.T) near Longyear Park in Ironwood for a traffic violation and on suspicion of transporting drugs from Duluth, MN based on numerous tips and surveillance of his movements by the G.I.A.N.T. team members. Following a K-9 sniff handled by Gogebic County Deputy Cody Smith with the aid of his drug detection dog, Debwe 82 grams of methamphetamine was discovered concealed behind the firewall of the vehicle under the hood as well as methamphetamine on Morison’s person and on his passenger, Cheyenne Chastain. Both were then taken into custody. Numerous other items of contraband were located following an extensive search of the vehicle, including drug paraphernalia, scales, notebooks containing other drug transactions and contacts indicative of further deliveries in the area. Morrison was sentenced by the Hon. Michael K. Pope to serve a minimum term in prison of thirteen years to a maximum of thirty years for the conspiracy charge and a minimum of one year to a maximum of three years for possession near a public park. The sentences were enhanced as Jacobs additionally charged Morrison as being a habitual offender. Under Michigan’s truth in sentencing law Morrison must serve the minimum terms imposed by the court before he is eligible for parole. Both sentences will run concurrently.
“Morrisons sentence is another fine example of our drug team combining their efforts to help eradicate the drug trade and serves as a deterrent to others thinking about peddling their poison in Gogebic County,” said Jacobs.
For her role, Chastain was previously sentenced on February 5, 2025 to a term of 7 years 3 months to 20 years on the methamphetamine charge and 1 year 2 months to 2 years for possession near a public park.
