Heating Assistance Available
Application Deadline: May 31, 2026

The Ohio Department of Development and Ironton-Lawrence County Area Community Action Organization want to remind older Ohioans that assistance is available to help with their home energy bills. The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) helps Ohioans at or below 175% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for a household of up to eight members and 60% of State Median Income for a household of nine or more members to pay their heating bills.

Applied directly to the customer’s utility or bulk fuel bill, the benefit can help manage heating costs. Older Ohioans may go to their local Area Agency on Aging office for help with assembling the required documents and completing their HEAP application. They may also visit www.energyhelp.ohio.gov to apply online or to download a copy of the application.

When applying, individuals need to have copies of the following documents:

· Most recent utility bills.
· A list of all household members (including birth dates and Social Security numbers).
· Proof of income for the past 30 days for all household members (12 months for certain income types).
· Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency for all household members.
· Proof of disability (if applicable).

HEAP benefits are applied to an individual’s energy bill after Jan. 1. Applications for the HEAP program must be received by May 31, 2026.

For more information or assistance with applying for a HEAP benefit, contact ILCAO’s Home Energy Assistance at 740-237-3262.

To be connected to your local Energy Assistance Provider, call (800) 282-0880 (hearing impaired clients may dial 711 for assistance) or visit www.energyhelp.ohio.gov.

Do you need assistance with your home energy costs? Ohio’s Energy Assistance Programs can help you manage your utility bills and improve your home’s energy efficiency.

If you've ever been by the ILCAO Admin Building, or "The John Campbell House," you may have noticed an unassuming, broken clock out front. While the clock hasn't worked in awhile, it has stood as a piece of the history of Ironton and of the house.

Last week, our maintenance crew gave this old clock a facelift! After some new paint, polishing, and a motor, the old timepiece is ticking again, and looking better than ever while doing it.

We love having opportunities to preserve little pieces of local history like this, especially at a home that has been a part of Ironton from the very beginning. We'd like to give a huge "Thank you!" to our maintenance crew and all who were involved for bringing this clock back to life.

And before you ask... we're pretty sure the ghosts appreciate knowing what time it is again too.

Summer Health Tips: What To Do For TICKS!

When do we see ticks? All year, but especially in the warm months between April and September.

Where do we see ticks? Tall grassy fields, wooded areas, bushes, and wild animals.

How can we prevent ticks? There are a number of ways:
- Use 0.5% Permethrin products to treat clothing, shoes, and camping gear
- Insect repellent, such as Deet. Read labels to see if age is appropriate for use
- Mow grass frequently to keep shorts; deters wildlife from entering your yard
- Apply pesticides to your yard (Make sure you read directions!)
- Talk to your veterinarian about which products are pet-safe
- Check clothing, shoes, gear, and pets immediately when coming indoors
- Shower within 2 hours of coming indoors to wash off any unattached ticks
- Check the entire body with attention to the scalp/hair, ears, belly button, arm pits, groin, and private areas

How can we remove ticks? Remove ticks ASAP using one of two ways: Tweezers or with your fingers (fingers can be used if the tick is not deeply embedded; DO NOT SQUEEZE THE TICK). Grab the tick as close to the skin as you can, pulling upwards with even, steady pressure without twisting or jerking the tick off. Place the tick on some tape and wrap it up tightly and place in the trash or place the tick in a baggie and freeze if any further determination of any illness is needed. Immediately wash the bite with soap and water, hand sanitizer, or alcohol, and wash your hands.

Why can't we crush ticks? Crushing ticks can expose germs to your hands. Burning ticks off can cause it to vomit fluids into the skin.

When should I be concerned about a tick? The CDC recommends monitoring up to 30 days for signs of infection after a tick bite. There is low risk for infection if attached for less than 24 hours. Ticks that are attached for over 36 hours may be more concern for infection.

What are signs disease or infection is spreading? Flu-like symptoms (fever, fatigue, chills, severe headache, body aches), stiff neck, swollen lymph nodes near site of the bite, and rash are all signs that point to disease or infection from tick bites.

What should I do if I have concerns? Go to Emergency Room if any concerns are felt to be life-threatening. Otherwise, contact your provider at FMC for concerns.
