As many of you may know, State Senator Ed McBroom is termed out and will not be running for reelection next year. This means that our 38th state Senate seat will be opening up. As of right now, we know of at least three good candidates who are running to succeed Senator McBroom. Earlier this month we were visited by Chris Reynolds who is one of those candidates. We want to remind our friends and followers that the 38th Senate seat is important. Please take the time to examine the candidates and stand with the one you like. The Iron County Republicans appreciate Mr. Reynolds for taking the time out of his busy schedule to call on us to share his message.

Iron County was privileged to have Eaton County Prosecutor, Doug Lloyd, in Crystal Falls on Thursday. He was at the court house meeting with precinct delegates and other elected officials. The Iron County Republicans are heartbroken to announce the passing of our best friend, chair and leader, Patricia Ashcraft. She has been leading our group for many years and through periods of local political change in Iron County. She was a wonderful person who loved community and people. Our prayers go out to her family.

State Representative Greg Markkanen was in town for the rodeo parade today. As a participant with the new Legislative Exchange Program here in Michigan, he hosted his Democrat colleague, State Representative Brenda Carter, in the 110th this weekend. This new program aims to connect lawmakers who come from different parties and districts that are far apart. Both representatives are the first to participate here in Michigan. 🤠

We would like to congratulate State Representative Greg Markkanen on being selected to serve on the House Appropriations Committee in Lansing this week. In addition to serving on that important committee, he has also been named as the chair for the Higher Education and Community Colleges Subcommittee. Representative Markkanen has also been chosen to serve on the Environment, Great Lakes & Energy Subcommittee. A long time has passed since upper Michigan last had a voice on the House Appropriations Committee and we are proud that Representative Markkanen will be upper Michigan's new voice on the state's budgets. He will be an honorable leader and advocate on all of his committee assignments and we look forward to his continued service and leadership in Lansing.

With the '24 election cycle in the past, we now have to look ahead. One of the first tasks that we have is to choose the next leader for our Michigan Republican Party. Scott Greenlee is one of the candidates running and he will be in Iron Mountain this evening. Please consider attending. One of our needs is to see a closer relationship with our state party and small laid back gatherings like this go a long way in creating connections. Your input is important.
