⭐Summer Spotlight: Meet Ms. Kathryn Meetze, one of our School District Five Teacher of the Year Finalists from the 2025-2026 school year!

Meetze has served as H. E. Corley Elementary School’s Reading Interventionist for 9 years. =She earned her Master of Educational Leadership from American College of Education and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Winthrop University, where she graduated cm laude.

Her greatest contributions to public education focus on improving literacy outcomes through intentional, data-driven instruction, and collaborative leadership. Meetze supports schoolwide RtI and MTSS initiatives by using student data to guide instructional decisions, refine interventions, and ensure equitable support for all learners. She is committed to mentoring teachers, fostering meaningful data conversations, and strengthening partnerships with families through literacy-focused outreach.

“I believe literacy is foundational to equity,” Meetze said. “I believe instruction must be responsive to data, not trends. I believe students deserve explicit teaching—not guesswork. I believe families are partners, which is why I share Sound Wall resources and decodable strategies during parent sessions so learning continues at home. Most of all, I believe that when students understand the structure of language, doors open. A Sound Wall is more than a display. A phonics lesson is more than a routine. They are tools that give children access—to texts, to knowledge, and to their own confidence.”

🎉🩵 Welcome, Ms. Unversaw!

Lexington-Richland School District Five has named Anna Unversaw as the new principal of Chapin Middle School (formerly Chapin Intermediate School). She will replace Brent Davis who is leaving at the end of the school year.

"As a Lexington-Richland School District Five graduate, I am honored to serve in the district that helped shape who I am today,” Unversaw said. “I have a passion for working with middle school students and teachers, and I’m excited to support the transition of Chapin Intermediate to a traditional middle school. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and look forward to the years ahead with this wonderful community.”

Unversaw currently serves as the Assistant Director of Academics at ALA Lexington. Prior to that position she served as Chief of Schools at Ascent Classical Academics of SC. She also served as principal at Northside Middle School in West Columbia and as a teacher at E. L. Wright Middle School in Columbia. Originally from Columbia, Unversaw has earned three degrees from the University of South Carolina, including her bachelor’s degree in government and international relations, master’s degree in mass communications, and master’s degree in educational leadership.

“Ms. Unversaw is a student-centered leader with a strong commitment to academic excellence, and relationship building,” Chief Academics Officer Tina McCaskill said. “We are excited to welcome her to Chapin Middle School and are confident that her passion for supporting students, staff, and families will continue the tradition of excellence that the Chapin community values so deeply. Her leadership experience with middle schools and dedication to helping all students succeed make her an outstanding fit for this important role.”

⭐ STUDENT LEADERSHIP: Irmo High School International School for the Arts rising junior and current Student Body Vice President Kaya Brunson recently participated in the 2026 South Carolina Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar held at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, from May 30–June 1.

The HOBY Leadership Seminar brings together outstanding high school sophomores from across South Carolina for an immersive leadership development experience. Students engage with HOBY volunteers and industry leaders from fields including education, medicine, government, business, and nonprofit service. The seminar is designed to help participants develop their leadership skills and learn how to apply them as effective, ethical leaders in their schools, communities, and future careers.

“Kaya was selected to represent Irmo High School because of her already impressive commitment to Irmo High School and our community as a student leader,” said Eric Coleman, advisor of Irmo’s Student Council.

Reflecting on her experience, Brunson said, “My time as a HOBY Ambassador helped grow my view of leadership. I was able to revisit my understanding of my leadership style and how that can affect my communication and service in my community. One of my favorite experiences was building my networking skills while creating great memories with leaders from around the state. I am excited to continue my leadership development by going to the 2026 World Leadership Congress conference next month.”

As a result of her participation, Brunson was selected through a nomination and interview process to receive a scholarship to attend the 2026 HOBY World Leadership Congress (WLC) in Washington, D.C., this July. She was the only student selected from the 2026 SC HOBY conference to receive the award.

The World Leadership Congress will bring together more than 300 student leaders from across the United States and dozens of countries for eight days of advanced leadership development designed to empower students to become more confident, caring leaders, and active global citizens. Students will leave the WLC with a robust global network and the tools to change the world around them.
