Labor Day was created in 1882, a time when factory workers were being extremely exploited so that a few people at the top could make outrageous amounts of money. Fast forward more than 140 years later, and that exploitation is again happening in America.
The businesses and products may have changed, but the zeal for greed and exploitation by the few over the many remains. That’s just one reason why we’ve been holding our Rally for Democracy this past Saturday was our 81st consecutive standout, and why after all that time we still have more than 100 stalwarts attend each week to show their support for a country that in its best times strives to make the lives of each person better, to demand that the authoritarianism being wielded by the current administration and its business and political enablers be stopped and reversed.
Because regardless of one’s political beliefs, we must remember that the vast majority of us regular citizens all want the same things: a liveable wage, a healthcare system that doesn’t bankrupt you, schools that educate our children to have successful lives, universities that don’t require people going into massive debt, real affordable housing and childcare so that one can raise a family making a liveable wage regardless of where they want to live, the hope that our children can do better than us, and a government that puts the the lives of its regular citizens over that of the billionaire/Epstein class.
So as we think about workers on this Labor Day, let’s remember that America at its best provides support for all its people so they can strive for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Nothing is guaranteed, of course, but we’re not going to reach that lofty goal unless we band together and reject the elites who want to rule over the working class.
