Iowa Falls EMS had another great training last night with Erik Skoog from Zoll Medical. He did a refresher on the use of our transport ventilators and we got to take a deep dive into all of the nuances of non-invasive ventilation used in the treatment of CHF, COPD, asthma, flash pulmonary edema, and other acute respiratory emergencies we frequently encounter in the field.

We had an “out-of-the-box” monthly training tonight that included pizza, popcorn, and movie theatre candy while watching the new EMS movie “Code 3” and talking as a crew about job stress, burnout, and never losing that passion that brought us to this work in the first place. Always thankful for all of our amazing crew members that give selflessly and without hesitation to help friends, neighbors, and strangers alike in their moments of greatest need!

Congrats to our partners at Hansen Family Hospital Emergency Department!

Hansen Family Hospital has been announced as the sixteenth hospital in Iowa to be recognized for readiness to provide emergency care for children through the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS) EMS for Children program’s new Iowa Pediatric Emergency Assessment and Care (IPEAC) Recognition Program.

Some of us from the Iowa Falls EMS crew had the opportunity last evening to train with the members of the brand new Ackley EMS first responders. It’s great to watch this group continue to grow and prepare themselves to serve the Ackley community!

Iowa Falls had a great monthly training last evening with a focus on High Performance CPR which takes a “pit-crew” approach to care for those who have experienced Sudden Cardiac Arrest. The crew divided into teams of 4-5 providers to rehearse this highly choreographed and cohesive approach to managing what can otherwise be extremely chaotic emergency scenes.

There are approximately 400,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year in the United States and the survival rate nationally is just 10%. The best predictors of a good outcome for someone in cardiac arrest are high-quality bystander CPR and early defibrillation from an AED.
