ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with Mike Rocca speaking in-person about his hobby “Blacksmithing”. Mike told about how his various jobs influenced his decision to learn about Blacksmithing. He had worked as a tool & die maker for GE, had worked in the UI Physics & Astronomy and in the UIHC Medical Labs. He started learning the skill about 50 years ago but then could concentrate on it more after he retired. He took classes and watched videos to perfect it. He began his presentation with a 5 minute video on constructing the proper fire including using the correct bituminous coal from West Virginia (doesn’t have as many impurities as other types of coal and will coke), placement of the element to be heated in the “sweet” spot and proper use of forced air to increase/decrease the temperature (range of 1200 to 1800 degrees F is best). He labels himself more an artistic, ornamental smithy rather than a functional one, though he manufactured 60 kitchen cabinet drawer & door handles for himself when doing a kitchen remodel. Mike brought with him boxes of his work including items made from steel & copper scrap such as wall sconce, flowers, candlestick holders and more. He is a member of the Cedar County Historical Society and has substituted as the Blacksmith at the Hoover National Library & Museum.

ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with Dan Hudson, a member of this club, who spoke in-person about collecting, shooting and showing ri**es. Dan first got interested in ri**es in high school in the 1950s when he helped a neighbor to get one repaired. He got the bug and has been collecting, trading, selling and showing ever since. He will focus on one particular brand & model to learn everything possible about its history and then will collect multiple ri**es of that style. He has not stuck to just one style but has multiple types in his collection. He talked about traveling to shows around our nation and one of his traveling companions was Bill Furnish, a member of this club until his death. Due to technical A/V issues he was unable to show his slide show but will be back to tell us more, especially about shooting matches.

ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W. in I.C.) with Damien Ihrig, MA, MLIS, Curator of John Martin Rare Book Room & Collection Management of Hardin Library for the Health Sciences , who spoke in-person about The John Martin Rare Book Room: A History of Medicine Collection. He gave us the history of John Martin, M.D. (1904-1996)and how he began to be a rare medical book collector at the end of WWII. Martin was a neurosurgeon serving in the US Army and came across his first book in Europe. By the time he retired he had accumulated 1,5050 rare books that he offered to NW University, but they rejected his donation. He had moved to be with relatives in Clarinda IA and became an Adjunct Professor in the UI College of Medicine, so it was logical that his next offer of his collection was to the newly planned Hardin Library for Health Sciences at UI. He also donated funds to The John Martin Rare Book Room to install fire prevention, improved air quality and an endowment for a curator. By the time of his death the collection had grown to 3,000 books and now is about 6,500 books. The oldest book is from 1470 A.D. Books can be rare based upon their subject matter, scarcity, medical subject matter importance, typeface, illustrations and condition.

ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W. in I.C.) with Geoff Fruin , City of Iowa City Manager, who spoke in-person about growth & development of his city. This was an encore presentation as he had presenting years ago to us as the Asst City Manager on the proposed passenger train considered from Chicago to Omaha that was rejected by the IA Governor Terry Branstad. Geoff told us that the I.C. population increased about 7,000 persons over the past decade putting us in the top 10 cities in IA for population growth. He spoke about the campuses of ACT, Pearson (& Moss Dairy Farm, which is located behind Pearson being purchased for a new ATI logistics terminal/warehouse) and the former Kirkwood Community College (with planned P&G subsidiary Oral B expansion including the acquisition of the MidAmerican Energy site), the UIHC expansion in the Northgate area and the eventual redevelopment of the Fairview Meadows Trailer Ct off W. Foster Rd & N. Dubuque St. Geoff showed us street improvement at Court St & Muscatine Ave, the new intersection on N. Dodge Street with signal lights across from Los Agaves Mexican restaurant, the new Burlington St Bridge with Grand Ave changes and the planned renovation of Taft Ave into an arterial street. City Park pool is being rebuilt but is behind schedule. Our Police Department will be moving out of City Hall over the next 2 years into the former ICCSD building on N. Dodge St.

ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with Shanel Wermerskirchen, MLIS, Expert Librarian and Director of UIHC Children’s and Patients’ Library, who spoke in-person on “ UIHC Patients' Library & Children's Library: Partners in Patient Care”. She brought with her two of her managers: Jennifer Von Behren (Support Services Coordinator) and Jen Giffin (Stead Children’s Librarian) to help relate the duties and functions of the libraries at the three UI Hospitals (Main Campus, Downtown and North Liberty).They fall under the Department of Patient Experiences to bridge between patients, families of patients and care giving teams. Also, under that department are Guest Services, Spiritual Services, Project Art, Volunteer Services, Interpretative Services and Patient Relations. On the Main Camus the Patient’s Library is on the 8th floor of Colloton Pavilion and the Children’s Library is on the ground floor of Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Donations pay for all the books, devices and media with the UIHC paying wages and benefits. They use work of mouth and emails to patient care teams to advertise their services. They deliver and pick up books and materials from patients. They have three dedicated in-house Tv stations (2 for kids and 1 for adults).

ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with Ryan Heiar, City of North Liberty Manager,
who spoke in-person about the growth and development of his city. He talked about various road & trail improvements including the roundabout on Forevergreen Road west of I-380 leading into Tiffin, the eastward expansion of Forevergreen Road in 3 phases from the roundabout near North Central Junior High school to N, Liberty Road & eventually to Dubuque St. The widening to 4 land of the final phase of Ranshaw Way/Hwy 965 with additional tunnels beneath for pedestrians & bicyclists, the trail expansion leading to Liberty High School on the east and from UIHC Orthopedics Hospital to Jones Blvd and then eventually to beyond I-380 to the west. They are in the process of completing an 8K sq ft splash pad at Centennial Park near the HyVee Community Center/Amphitheater and the $100K private donation to build an ADA playground. There were 455 residential housing permits issued in 2025. Cedarhurst is another senior living facility similar to Keystone being planned near Kansas Ave and Forevergreen Rd, They will be using the newly approved local option sales tax funds (anticipated about $22M) to continue with the redevelopment of the government campus in central North Liberty including relocate Water & Maintenance Department facilities before tearing down the fire station to build a new & better one.

ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with Dr. Rick Walton, a retired UI dental professor, who spoke in-person about “Mountains to the Heavens: Climbing to the Everest Base Camp”. This was another encore presentation by Rick accompanied by Laura, his wife. The trip he described was to Nepal and a partial climb of Mount Everest. They were flown in a small-fixed wing plane along with 16 other members of their group from Iowa to a landing strip at 9K feet above sea level elevation and then climbed for the next 6 day to an elevation of 18.2K feet. The climb was led by Sherpa guides who also carried the bulk of their supplies & equipment with the assistance of yaks. Sherpas set up and tear down the encampments , cook the food, heat the water for hot showers and even do primitive laundry service on the trail. Yaks have the right-away on trials and when crossing suspension bridges. Yak dung is collected and dried to be used as a fuel source along the trek. The major source of income in Nepal is tourism but during their trek the presence of Maoist Communist terrorists caused a 50% reduction in tourists. They had no encounter with terrorists

ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with Kelly Hayworth, City of Coralville Administrator, spoke in-person about the growth and development of his city. He recapped several street renovations and expansions including: 5th Street replacement from 10th Ave to the HyVee store (this is the original Hwy 6 pavement), Forevergreen Rd extension from the roundabout by the middle school extending eastward to 1st Ave and the construction of a roundabout by the gas station entrance to Costco (they will reverse the direction of their traffic flow pattern through the pumps and add 3 new pumps). The Coralville Recreation Center is being replaced with a new and bigger facility after a study showed it would be more economical to do so rather than remodel and piecemeal add-ons. There are plans to revise S.T. Morrison Park that will enhance it for events and enable it to handle more surface drainage functions. Gather Iowa is developing several acres along 2nd St between Walgreens and the Iowa Land Lodge that will provide for 300 new housing units, 13K sq ft of commercial space and a new short-stay hotel. Iowa River Power is currently under restoration by a new owner who is replacing the roof, the windows and making major changes to the restaurant/mezzanine/bar with anticipated opening in the Fall of 2027. West Coralville adding 2K housing units, Central Area housing units upgrade and improved infrastructure (streets, water, sewer, etc.). Morrison Weighing expanding and relocating from Milan Il. Goodwill of Heartlands is going strong with their soy oil packaging plant of Hwy 6 W.
