ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with Bunny Morrison, R.N. (retired from Mercy Hospital) who spoke in-person about the Nurses Honor Guard. Bunny along two other nurses began forming this service organization honoring deceased nurses in Sep 2024 and it now consists of 40 nurses. She told us about the history of the Guard beginning with the Nightengale Tribute started by the Kansas State Nurses Association in 2003. In 2014, the first actual Guard unit was formed. There are now 24 Guard units in Iowa with each covering about a 50–60-mile range. A nurse (both R.N.& L.P.N.) can request the Guard service before death or a family member can arrange it during funeral planning. The 5-10 minute service is provided without cost to the nurse or family. A minimum of 3 nurses if needed to perform the honor rites but usually there are 10 or so in attendance. This honor means so much to the family of the nurse and is very moving to all in attendance

ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with Jana Michael, Executive Director of Bird House, who spoke in-person about the features and services offered by her not-for-profit hospice home. The End-of-Life Care home has five private rooms. She said their census varies day-to-day from zero to full. It is not intended to be a long-term care facility but rather a place to spend your last several days with all the wildlife that makes it a very peaceful place to be. They provide 24/7 inpatient services for eight different hospice agencies utilizing a private caregiver agency. Medicaid/Medicare pays for the medicine being dispensed but the $450 daily rate is privately paid including long-term health insurance reimbursements to the deceased family. In their 10 years of existence, they have cared for 500 individuals of all ages. Their budget is $1m/year with the Holiday Lights at Coralville Lake generating about $100k of that amount. Friends and families of deceased clients provide meal train services so that current families don’t have to leave to get fast food. Lois Bird made a substantial donation in her husband’s memory to build Bird House.

ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with Dr. Rick Walton, who spoke in-person about “7 Marathons on 7 Continents: Running the World”. He didn’t start running in marathons until his brother-in-law challenged him to do so in his early 50s. He continued running in them up to his 80s. After his last one he knew that it was time to call it quits. Rick showed slides of the seven marathons and told which was the toughest, easiest, most interesting and most boring. The marathon in Antarctica was conducted on board the ship that brought 87 persons to the event. They were relegated to running on the ship because the seas were too rough to allow them to disembark on Zodiacs for shore.

ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with Doris Montag who spoke in-person about “The Chicken & The Egg or How Do Chickens Do It?”. Doris told how egg production has changed over the years from the farm wife with up to 400 chickens living cage-free to the massive confinement centers with thousands of birds. Farm flocks were prone to pecking order of larger birds dominating smaller birds, outdoor diseases, drastic temperature changes both hot & cold and predators. That system had about a 40% mortality rate and low production rates. By switching to indoors with raised floors with cages the mortality rate declined to 5% and resulted in higher production of eggs. She went on to talk about testing eggs in a glass of water to determine their freshness. Then she talked about how the eggs are fertilized. This was definitely a Laugh and Educate program.

ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with the Threshold Choir. Beth Broman, Ellie Hochstetler, Carol Hulseberg and Heidi Gingerich appeared in-person to tell us about their choir and to sing us a few tunes. The Threshold Choir is over 25 years old and has 200 chapters with over 2,900 members. The Iowa City chapter started in 2019 and has 12-13 members. They sing 3-part acappella harmony. Their songs are original written especially for their choir to be sung for persons on the threshold of death. Usually, they have 3-4 members go to the home, hospital, hospice or nursing home to sing at no charge. Because hearing is one of the last senses to go, they are able to reach out to those who are even semi-conscious. They consider it their privilege to offer this service.

ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with Jennifer Seydel who spoke in-person about “Exploring the Appalachian Trail”. Although she hiked the entire 2,197 miles of the trail stretching from GA to ME, she didn’t do it one non-stop, continuous trek, but instead broke it up into manageable segments to be done over a 7-month period, which is the way most hikers complete the entire trail. She was 68 years old and was going to be hiking solo. The very first segment she did was 30 miles at the northern terminus of the trail in ME. She then did considerable research and preplanning in considering what she would backpack, how much weight she would be carrying, how many miles per segment, etc. She prepared spreadsheets to organize all this data. During some segments when wearing a backpack she averages 10-15 miles per day. Then during slack pack segments (when using an outfitter to carry her backpack to the next stop) she could increase the distance up to 20-25 miles per day. She slept in a tent, hostel or lodges along the trail. Shelters and outhouses were available about every 8 miles except in one state which had no outhouses. Not all portions of the trail were hiking but instead were technical climbs. She said she wore out 6 pairs of shoes and had one pair that were the wrong kind resulting in knee pain requiring 9 days of physical therapy before she could get back on the trail.

ZOOM simulcast meeting (for those not able to attend in-person) at IC Pizza Ranch (located at 171 Hwy 1 W) with Jennifer Jones, Outreach Education and Program Coordinator for The Csomay Center for Gerontological Excellence in the College of Nursing at The U of I, who spoke on ‘Community Impact on Aging”. She told us about the formation of and mission of the Center. The Center serves as a hub connector to community resources, sponsorship, promotions and for students & volunteers. She said aging is the common denominator that we all share. Only 1% of nurses receive Gero education or rotate through this specialty even though the number of seniors increases and the number of youth declines. She had researched about Kiwanis and praised our mission of developing and preparing youth because they are the ones who are going to have to deal with aging issues in their future.
