Huge win for the members of the Iowa Professional Fire Fighters and International Association of Fire Fighters today! Thanks to everyone that put in the endless hours of work on this. From Assistant to the General President Kevin Barry O'Connor :
Most fire fighters hate politics. A lot of them want to stay out of the political game all together. Understandable.
I wanted to post an accomplishment that OUR Union, OUR General President, OUR grassroots program and OUR IAFF staff achieved yesterday.
We all know that the Social Security Offsets have stolen money from our Social Security checks for over 40 years.
General President Edward Kelly made this a top priority and personally involved himself with the advocacy and engagement around repeal. That had never occurred in my working lifetime in the fire service or the union world.
Yesterday, we succeeded in getting a discharge petition passed That’s Congress-speak to describe a process that bypasses the rules and structures of the House and compels the Speaker to bring the issue directly to the floor for a vote. It requires getting at least 218 members to sign the petition. We got 47 Republicans and about 180 Democrats to support discharge.
BTW: Shout out to Baltimore FOA Local 964 President Joshua L. Fannon who represented the IAFF on a Hill press conference yesterday Great job!
I normally don’t post a lot on the processes of lobbying because, frankly, it’s boring and mundane.
But all of our members need to understand that what happened yesterday was HISTORIC and your UNION made it happen.
Discharge Petitions are a direct f**k to House Leadership. As a result, they seldom pass.
Here’s the take away.
Since 1985, there have ONLY been SEVEN successful discharge petitions—-including our discharge yesterday. SEVEN in 39 years or 19 Congresses.
Say what you will about our politics. What the IAFF does works and has for a very long time.
The vote will now be scheduled and we are closer not to repeal than we ever have been.
One other thing, yesterday we also passed a bill to provide EMS grants to rural departments. That’s now headed to President’s Biden’s desk for signature.
