These are some of the questions that engineers and transportation planners grapple with as they work to plan and prioritize local infrastructure investments.

MPOJC is in the process of developing its next Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), Connect 2055. This plan will help guide decision-making regarding transportation improvements and investments in the Iowa City Metro and is a requirement for securing state and federal funding for local transportation projects.

This survey is an opportunity for you to help us plan for 25 years of transportation improvements: How do you travel every day? Would you choose a different way to get there? What aspects of safety and efficiency are most important to you? How do we make our transportation system work better for everyone?

All who live, work, attend school, visit, or do business in Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, Tiffin, University Heights, and surrounding portions of Johnson County are invited to share their input.

Use the link in our bio to take the survey and share your ideas for making our transportation system better.

Connect 2055— Long Range Transportation Plan sets transportation infrastructure project priorities for the next 25 years of federal funding for Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, University Heights, and surrounding portions of Johnson County.

Federal funding supports the construction and improvement of most of our arterial and collector streets, regional trails, and public transit. The next 20 years will bring many important projects, such as the replacement of the Burlington Street Bridge, the extension to Forevergreen Road, the expansion on Ranshaw Way in North Liberty, and complete streets improvement on Melrose Avenue in University Heights.

Beyond setting funding priorities, the Long Range Transportation Plan considers the future growth of the metro area to establish a shared vision of a transportation system designed to serve everyone who lives and works here.

In 2025, the state of Iowa recorded the lowest number of traffic fatalities (250) in a century. Within our MPO area, that number was ZERO. Additionally, there was a 29% reduction in suspected serious injury crashes in our area.

This data considers all modes of transportation, including bicycles and pedestrians, and includes segments of I-80, I-380, and US Highway 218 that pass through MPO communities.

MPOJC is working with its member communities (Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, Tiffin, and University Heights) on a comprehensive safety action plan focused on reducing or eliminating serious injury and fatal crashes on local roads.

In the coming months, we will report additional crash data and provide information on behaviors, countermeasures, and other actions that can help make our roads safe for all users.

Drive safe in 2026!
