Just finished an exercise in life lessons for my grandsons...and half the neighborhood kids. Ian wants to go to basketball camp but didn't have the money. Instead of handing him a check, I suggested he raise money with a bake sale. He embraced the idea enthusiastically, and helped me plan what to make and how much to charge. Then he, his brother, and 4 friends spent the afternoon into the evening on Friday with me as I supervised, and they baked. Armed with 2 loaves of bread, 3 dozen rolls, 7 dozen cookies, 2 pies, 2 pans of brownies, 2 pans of Rice Krispie bars, a pan of pumpkin bars, and a very large jug of lemonade, they were ready to greet customers by 8:30 this morning. And they had made everything except the pies. I was proud of the way they promoted their goods, interacted with people, calculated sales (without a calculator), made change, and thanked their customers. Lessons learned: yeast is what makes bread raise, $75 can be tripled in a day of hard work, if you really want something...work for it, working can be fun, and most of all...it feels good to earn it yourself. Hmmmm...and the oldest in the group was 10 years old. Society would be a better place if we could just teach a few adults some of these lessons instead of espousing philosophies that tell us the government needs to give us more.
On top of a successful bake sale, I enjoyed meeting neighbors as they came to shop, visiting with them about the up-coming election. I was joined by 2 of my very best friends who made the time fly by. Hope you had a great Saturday as well, and if you haven't voted yet, don't forget the Primary is TUESDAY!
