The Primary election is over. I did not win, but I want to thank everyone that helped me along the way...especially my family for believing that I could do this. Tomorrow the sun will come up and there will be plenty to do as always. I have been in contact with Royce and will be having conversations with him to see where I might impact his campaign. Thank you EVERYBODY for your love and support!

Today is Primary day! Remember to vote. If you need a ride to your polling place, please give us a call. We need a good showing to let people know that this election is important to us. Remember is you want your concerns heard, this is how it starts. Voting is expected to be light which means EVERY vote is huge in moving that meter one way or the other. PLEASE vote!

Just to keep everyone informed the Johnson County Auditor's office has made the following changes in polling places:
The Johnson County Auditor’s Office has permanently moved ten polling places since the 2014 general election. In addition, two precincts are returning to prior locations for the June 7 primary, and one precinct will vote at a temporary location.

Most of the new locations are required in order to meet requirements of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002. These standards include requirements for parking, drop-off areas, and for maximum angle of ramps. These standards are above and beyond requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.

New voter cards were mailed to all Johnson County voters in early April. Signs will be posted as required by law at former polling places.

The following precincts will move to new locations:

Cedar Township: Solon City Hall, 101 N. Iowa St. (Former site Cedar Township Hall) Note that a new Johnson County Conservation building will be built near the Sutliff Bridge. We hope to move voting there once construction is complete.

Coralville 1: Coralville Public Library, 1401 5th St. (Former site Central Elementary)

Iowa City 3: Mary Louise Petersen Hall, 304 Grand Ave. (Former site Quadrangle)

Iowa City 13: Hawks Ridge Apartments, 100 Hawks Ridge Dr. (Former site City Transit)

Iowa City 17: Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2301 E. Court St. (Former site City High)

Iowa City 23: Iowa City Community School District Administration Office, 1725 N Dodge St. (Former site Regina)

Jefferson West/Monroe/Swisher: Swisher Community Library, 72 2nd St. SW (Former site American Legion)

Newport Township: Celebration Farm, 4696 Robins Wood Ln NE (Former Site St. Mary’s Church)

North Liberty 6/Madison: University of Iowa Community Credit Union, 2355 Landon Rd. (Former site North Bend Elementary)

Oxford: Clear Creek Amana Elementary, 230 W. Wilson St. (Former site City Hall)

The following precincts will return to prior locations:

Clear Creek Township and Tiffin: Tiffin City Hall, 300 Railroad St. The polling place was moved out of City Hall earlier this year, to avoid a schedule conflict with city council meetings. The city council has now rescheduled its meetings to accommodate voting.

Hardin Township: St. Peter’s Hall, 2009 400th St. SW. Reconstruction of the hall is now complete.

For the June 7 primary, University Heights will again vote at the Athletic Hall of Fame, 2425 Prairie Meadow Drive. The auditor will make a decision on a new permanent site for University Heights before the presidential election.

Voters in North Liberty Precincts 1 and 5 will vote in the same building at 520 W. Cherry Street, but voting will be in the downstairs of the Recreation Center, rather than upstairs in the Library.

Happy Voting!

One last reminder...remember to vote! YOUR vote counts! Turnout is expected to be light. Therefore, 10 votes can make a HUGE difference. You can vote at your precinct polling place on Tuesday or vote early on Monday at the Johnson County Auditor's office. Anyone needing a ride can contact me, and I will be more than happy to give or arrange a ride for you. You must be registered as a Republican to vote for me, and can change registration at the poll if desired. Let's surprise them and have a really good turnout. THANKS!

Just finished an exercise in life lessons for my grandsons...and half the neighborhood kids. Ian wants to go to basketball camp but didn't have the money. Instead of handing him a check, I suggested he raise money with a bake sale. He embraced the idea enthusiastically, and helped me plan what to make and how much to charge. Then he, his brother, and 4 friends spent the afternoon into the evening on Friday with me as I supervised, and they baked. Armed with 2 loaves of bread, 3 dozen rolls, 7 dozen cookies, 2 pies, 2 pans of brownies, 2 pans of Rice Krispie bars, a pan of pumpkin bars, and a very large jug of lemonade, they were ready to greet customers by 8:30 this morning. And they had made everything except the pies. I was proud of the way they promoted their goods, interacted with people, calculated sales (without a calculator), made change, and thanked their customers. Lessons learned: yeast is what makes bread raise, $75 can be tripled in a day of hard work, if you really want something...work for it, working can be fun, and most of all...it feels good to earn it yourself. Hmmmm...and the oldest in the group was 10 years old. Society would be a better place if we could just teach a few adults some of these lessons instead of espousing philosophies that tell us the government needs to give us more.
On top of a successful bake sale, I enjoyed meeting neighbors as they came to shop, visiting with them about the up-coming election. I was joined by 2 of my very best friends who made the time fly by. Hope you had a great Saturday as well, and if you haven't voted yet, don't forget the Primary is TUESDAY!

FREEDOM & LEMONADE!!

Come and do your scavenging at the Lake Ridge community garage sale, and be sure to come enjoy some of my grandson's baked goods to help him earn his way to basketball camp. I will be around to talk politics or discuss your concerns. And if you don't find enough treasures at garage sales comma the Mennonites are having their sale at the fairgrounds right next door. There will be plenty of sunshine, so come enjoy the day with us.

It's a beautiful day to celebrate Memorial Day! ...and I enjoyed doing so with the good folks in Lone Tree. Nobody does Memorial Day like a small town. Terry Kruse led the festivities reminding us that "to find out the price of gas, we look at the pump; to find out the price of milk, we look at the shelf; but to find out the price of freedom, we look here (as he indicated the cemetery)." It was a very poignant reminder of those brave men and women that have given their lives, so that we might be free. Alison Forbes was very poised at the podium as she gave the keynote speech, "What does Memorial Day Mean to You?" Jill Sterner was inspirational as she led the crowd in song. But I have to be honest, my favorite part of the event was meeting more of the people of Lone Tree as they chatted both outside in the parking lot and inside the Legion Hall after the festivities. It always feels like going home when I go to Lone Tree. So no matter where you are today, I hope you too will pause to remember what this day is really about, and give thanks that we are able to celebrate! Happy Memorial Day!

The Primary Election is getting closer! I spent the day door knocking at Frytown and Joetown yesterday. Love the people there! Honest and hardworking. And speaking of working...we even found a phone booth with a working phone! How fun! Once again we listened to what people had to say. We heard concerns about what has happened with mental health care, schools, education, bullying (even by adults...including teachers!) I was touched by the warmth of people we met and the depth of their concerns. Tomorrow I will be in North Liberty wandering around at the Farmer's Market and Monday I will be enjoying festivities in Lone Tree in the morning. Hope to see some of you at these events! And remember out Vets and all loved ones as we celebrate this Memorial Day. Have fun and stay stay safe!
