The staff at Ionia County Central Dispatch are so grateful to all those brave people that have served and given their lives for our country and the freedoms we have. We also hope that we are able to someday reach the point that we no longer have to add any more people to the list that we honor on Memorial Day!

We also pray that the men and women of our military are kept safe as they continue to serve on our behalf! 🙏

Yesterday afternoon, Ionia County was placed under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, and experienced a significant surge in emergency activity as the storms moved through the area.

From the first storm-related call at 2:42 PM through 6:00 PM, our dispatch center answered 231 phone calls and generated 110 calls for service.

To put that into perspective, during the same timeframe on a typical busy summer day, our center averages approximately 40 calls for service.

At the height of the storm activity, three dispatchers and one supervisor worked continuously to answer calls, dispatch first responders, contact power companies and the road department, and send warning messages to the county. Calls ranged from power lines down and traffic hazards to weather-related emergencies and public safety concerns.

We are incredibly proud of the professionalism and teamwork demonstrated by our staff during a very demanding afternoon. We also appreciate the patience of our community as our dispatchers worked through a high volume of incoming calls to ensure emergency situations were prioritized appropriately.

Thank you to all of our first responders, utility crews, road department crews, and partner agencies who worked together to keep Ionia County safe.

Last week, during National Police Week, we paused to recognize and honor the brave men and women in law enforcement who dedicate their lives to protecting our communities.

We have the privilege of working alongside officers who willingly put themselves in harm’s way each day. Their commitment often requires sacrifices that go unseen- long hours, missed holidays, nights away from family, and countless moments spent responding to the call when others need help most.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all law enforcement agencies and officers for their courage, professionalism, and unwavering service. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and we deeply appreciate the work you do to keep our communities safe.

Thank you for your sacrifice, your resilience, and your continued commitment to serving others.
