There are so many great sessions planned for our 2026 Midwest Region Meeting! Here's a highlight on some of the things you can expect to learn.

◾️ SHARED STORIES, SHARED GOALS: THE UWL-WISCONSIN DOC STORYBOOK PROJECT
- A collaborative initiative between the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse and the Wisconsin Department of Corrections connecting incarcerated parents with their children through recorded storybooks and innovative program development.

◾️ RESTORING THE FAMILY BOND: TWO STATES' EXPERIENCES
- Two innovative programs that help restore the family bond, Kansas Department of Corrections “Play Free” program in partnership with the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, and Wisconsin Department of Corrections “Camp Reunite” program in partnership with Camp Hometown Heroes.

◾️ THE TRENCHES OF CHANGE: FROM INCARCERATION TO LEGISLATION
- What becomes achievable when correctional leadership and lived experience work in alignment to strengthen outcomes and advance public safety.

◾️ IDENTIFY, CONNECT, UNDERSTAND
- The framework to help support staff in crisis - key design decisions, implementation strategies, and lessons learned, with a focus on building a practical and scalable approach that fits the realities of corrections.

Exciting news! 🎉

Please join us in welcoming Secretary Alisha Tafoya Lucero of the New Mexico Corrections Department as the new Chair of CLA’s Healthcare Committee. Her experience and leadership will help guide key conversations around reentry planning, mental health and substance use treatment, and sharing ideas to improve care with limited resources.

We look forward to the collaboration and impact ahead!

This year's 2026 Southern Region Meeting was hosted by the Oklahoma Department of Corrections in Oklahoma City! We collaborated in intentional sessions, enjoyed time connecting with one another, and even had the opportunity to tour an ODOC academy for correctional officers. One of our most memorable sessions to date invited correctional officers from four Southern states to share their perspectives and answer questions from Directors.
Thank you to Executive Director Justin Farris and Secretary Ricky Dixon for putting together a memorable meeting. Our regional meetings are some of our favorite events, and we are looking forward to our Midwest Region Meeting next week!
