VOTE JOLLY!
Florida’s governor has tremendous influence over the direction of public education.
The governor appoints all seven members of the State Board of Education, subject to Senate confirmation. The governor does not directly select the commissioner of education, but the governor-appointed State Board does.
That distinction matters, but so does the connection.
A board shaped by a governor’s appointments is likely to reflect that governor’s education priorities. When that board selects the commissioner, it is not operating in isolation from the governor’s influence. This appointment structure gives the governor significant power over the leadership, rules, and direction of Florida’s education system.
Recent comments questioning whether Florida needs government-operated schools underscore what is at stake.
Voters should ask every candidate for governor:
Do you believe Florida has a responsibility to maintain a strong system of free public schools?
Whom would you appoint to the State Board of Education?
What qualifications and values would you require?
Would your appointees protect public education for every student?
School board races matter, but the governor’s race may shape public education across the entire state for years.
Understand the power behind the office. Research the candidates. Vote the whole ballot.
