A reminder for what prompted MN to have a “Move Over Law” for emergency/services and other vehicles along the roadways… MN State Patrol Corporal Ted Foss, was struck and killed 26 years ago today while conducting a traffic stop of a mini van in southern MN. While talking with the mini van driver, a semi veered off of the road, striking Cpl. Foss, his squad and the mini-van. Cpl. Foss died at the scene. After his death, the MN Legislature passed the Ted Foss Move Over Law requiring vehicles to move to the middle or far lane when passing an emergency or other vehicle stopped on the roadway. IF YOU CAN’T MOVE OVER, SLOW DOWN!!

$1,000!! THANK YOU - to all of our residents, firefighters, visitors and anyone who bought our pink patches!!! We were able to donate $1,000 today! When we first started selling our patches, we earmarked 100% of the proceeds to go to the Red Knights Motorcycle Club (MN Chapter 4) located in Plymouth. This chapter, which is made up of active and retired firefighters, donates 100% of their proceeds to local active/retired firefighters, or family members of firefighters who are fighting cancer! Today, they held their annual ride (of which some from IGH attended) and fundraiser and IGH FD was able to present them with a check that will go to an active fire chief fighting brain cancer and the daughter of an active fire chief who is fighting breast cancer! We will continue to sell pink patches year-round at fire station 2 and at our annual open house this October! https://redknightsmn4.org

Did you know that our firefighters are skilled in surgery outside of a hospital setting? Somehow, one of the arms of Rescue Randy (our rescue mannequin) fell off, so these three ‘surgeons’ are attempting to reattach it! All in a day’s work! 😎

Please join me in congratulating IGH Deputy Fire Chief Eric Bergum on being selected for the national Training Officer of the Year Award from the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), Volunteer and Combination Section!!! Deputy Chief Bergum received this award earlier this week at the IAFC’s annual national conference in Kansas City!

This award was given for a career of dedication to training that has involved coming up with ideas and/or collaborating with others for unique training opportunities, and seeing those projects through to completion. Just a few of the types of projects Deputy Chief Bergum has been involved with include:
- designing many training areas into station 2 so firefighters don’t have to go outside the city for training and can train year-round,
- starting the Simley Pathways Cadet program so high school students can graduate with adult fire certifications,
- overseeing the Northern Dakota Training Academy which has now included fire recruits from 5 counties,
- along with creating special training drills and using a digital fire training platform to allow POC firefighters to train on-shift so they don’t have to come in as often on their nights/days off. Those on-shift trainings give them more time with their families and can help retain firefighters!

Deputy Chief Bergum has been part of IGHFD for 38 years, serving as Chief 2 for the past 19 and in various other officer positions before that. He oversees Training, Operations, Fleet, Stations and Equipment.

When interviewed about the award, Deputy Chief Bergum stated, “This award truly should go to our whole team for their buy-in, as well as the effort they have put into our fire training.”

The IAFC stated they received a large number nominations for this award, so this is quite an honor for Deputy Chief Bergum to be selected!

Special Congratulations to IGH Recruit Matt Kayser! Recruit Kayser was the very first high school Pathways Cadet to complete his training and join our fire department as an on-call firefighter, right after he completed high school! Our Pathways Cadet program started with Simley HS, allowing high school students during their junior and senior years to participate in the adult Northern Dakota Training Academy, where Recruit Kayser graduated this past Sunday! Congratulations Recruit Kayser!

Huge congratulations to the the graduates of the Northern Dakota Training Academy, which this year included recruits from IGH, Rosemount, Red Wing, Woodbury, St. Paul Park and Newport!! This is an academy for newly hired on-call firefighters, providing them with training and state certifications in Firefighter 1, Hazardous Materials and Firefighter 2, along with Emergency Medical Responder, if they join without medical training. All of that training takes a 12-month committment!

While this academy, which is hosted by the IGH FD, started out for members of departments in Northern Dakota County, it has expanded to have included recruits from Goodhue, Washington, Hennepin and Scott Counties! Thank you to all those who instructed over the past 12 months, especially IGH Assistant Chief Cory Rosendale who lead the instruction! Congratulations to all!
