SPORTS IN KANSAS 2A GIRLS STATE TRACK & FIELD PREVIEW
2A girls may feature one of the most balanced classifications in Kansas this season with elite sprinters, standout distance runners, loaded relays and several versatile athletes capable of massive weekends in Wichita.
It is extremely important to note all marks listed throughout this preview are regional performances only and not season bests. Several athletes and relay teams across the classification have produced much stronger performances earlier this spring which could make the state meet even more competitive than the seeds currently suggest.
Regional champions last week included Berean Academy, Doniphan West, Hoxie and Marion, four programs that once again appear positioned for strong trophy pushes in Wichita.
SPRINTS
The sprint races should be outstanding throughout the weekend and once again all times listed are regional performances only.
Ellinwood standout Reagan Wirtz enters with the top regional mark in the 100 at 12.16 while Hoxie star Camryn Gourley follows closely at 12.34. Inman’s Olivia Brunk and Salina Sacred Heart’s Aundrea Ibarra also remain firmly in contention in what could become one of the fastest sprint finals in 2A.
The 200 may be even deeper. Sterling’s Julia Kilgore, a multiple time state champion, enters with the top regional mark at 25.37 while Wirtz and Gourley are right behind. Marion’s Dylan Kraus headlines the 400 after running a regional-best 57.46 while Stanton County’s Hannah Canny and Sterling’s Kilgore also enter below 58 seconds based strictly off regional marks.
DISTANCE
Smith Center standout Madison Howland has been one of the premier distance runners in 2A over the last several seasons and once again enters Wichita as a major contender across multiple events.
Howland owns the top regional 1600 mark at 5:10.55 and also ranks among the top contenders in the 800 and 3200. Her ability to consistently score in multiple distance events has helped make Smith Center a yearly contender in 2A.
Salina Sacred Heart’s Emmy Lee enters with the top regional 800 mark at 2:17.77 while Plainville’s Brilynn Trumpp, Northern Heights’ Ellei McCrory and Bluestem’s Reagan Neal headline a loaded distance group behind Howland.
The 1600 could become one of the best races of the weekend with several athletes tightly packed entering state.
Remington’s Alyssa Klingenberg owns the top regional 3200 mark at 11:53.51 while Howland, Trumpp, Hillsboro’s Quinlyn Funk and Neal all remain close behind. Several of these runners have posted stronger season-best performances beyond their regional marks.
HURDLES
Hoxie’s Camryn Gourley enters as one of the classification’s biggest stars after posting the top regional marks in both hurdle events at 14.43 in the 100 hurdles and 46.16 in the 300 hurdles.
Doniphan West’s Reese McCauley sits close behind in both events while Washington County’s Anna Goeckel, Inman’s Brooklyn Black and Bennington’s Reece Wolf headline an outstanding hurdle field.
The 300 hurdles appear especially competitive with several athletes capable of running significantly faster than their regional seeds at state.
RELAYS
Relays may completely determine the team race and several teams have season-best performances stronger than their regional marks.
Inman enters with the top regional 4x100 mark at 49.99 while Hoxie and Lyndon remain right behind.
The 4x400 could become one of the premier relay races in Kansas this season. Inman enters with the top regional mark at 4:06.12, but Marion, Stanton County, Berean Academy, Moundridge and Lyndon are all within striking distance.
The 4x800 features impressive depth as well. Pittsburg Colgan and Northern Heights both enter under 10 minutes while Salina Sacred Heart, Moundridge and Marion also appear capable of major points.
FIELD EVENTS
The field events once again feature elite athletes throughout the classification and several competitors have season bests beyond their current regional marks.
Northern Heights standout Jaitlyn Johnson enters discus with the top regional throw at 142-10 while Hoxie’s Jaylen Herl and Chase County’s Madelyn Wilson also enter with huge marks.
Wilson leads the shot put at 38-4.5 while Horton’s Kara CoversUp and Berean Academy’s Claira Wiebe remain close behind.
Bennington’s Jordan Bartlett enters javelin with the top regional mark at 143-7, one of the top throws in Kansas regardless of classification. Chase County’s Vonda Danford, Conway Springs’ Delaney Jones and Hoxie’s Kendall Baalman also enter with major state-title potential.
Oakley standout Alexa Weiser enters as one of the classification’s premier field event athletes. Weiser leads triple jump at 37 feet and also ranks near the top in long jump. Ellinwood’s Reagan Wirtz owns the top regional long jump mark at 18-9.5 while Oakley teammates Weiser and Haylie Broeckelman remain right behind.
Lyndon’s Phoebe Wright enters high jump with the top regional clearance at 5-6 while Syracuse standout Bronwyn Lewis leads pole vault at 11-6.
TEAM RACE
The team race appears completely open entering Wichita and regional performances alone suggest multiple programs are capable of winning a state championship.
Hoxie appears positioned for a massive weekend behind the versatility of Gourley and strong relay potential while Inman’s sprint, hurdle and relay depth makes the Teutons one of the favorites.
Marion, Lyndon, Smith Center and Ellinwood all appear capable of putting together trophy-level weekends while programs such as Berean Academy, Doniphan West, Oakley and Salina Sacred Heart also possess major scoring upside.
With these marks only representing regional performances, expect several athletes and teams to elevate to another level once the state meet begins in Wichita.
